If the flukes have a split tail and not a paddle tail they will spin. They are used as soft plastic jerkbaits not swimbaits and a swivel helps with line twist.

If everything is a soft plastic swimbait a weighted swimbait hook helps keep the bait running true and can help with depth control. You can fish them weightless but reeling too fast will cause the bait to roll.

As for where to throw them, on the edges of vegetation, over submerged grass, around laydowns, ect. There is a lot you can do with them and other people will chime in with tips.

Pretty much what beard said.

I find that the fluke type baits are going to do better if you twitch them as opposed to just wind them in. And as he mentioned, the weighted swim bait hooks will help act as a keel.

I normally fish flukes, super flukes and Rad Shad's from Bruiser Baits weedless and weightless. I generally use them more as a top water bait by "walking" them through grass or on top of grass when it is to or just below the surface. I have fished them weighted but have had more luck in salt water that way.

You can also consider picking up some paddle tail swim baits also. I know Yum and others make some. I have had great success with Bruiser Baits Super Swimmer. I use a weighted swim bait hook and vary the retrieve. I am finding that I get most strikes using a pull up, then let it fall type retrieve either in the vegetation or as it comes out of the weeds.

With the regular flukes, you can use a small barrel swivel to serve as a leader point. Run another 1' of line or so from the snap swivel and tie on hook. That will solve the spinning issue.

Cant really add to what has been said, a fluke is more of a soft jerkbait, rig it weedless on a EWG hook if throwing in grass, if no grass you can always nose rig it with a octopus circle hook, a twitch pause twitch retrieve is used. Dont know if your fishing in current but if you are they are a great deadstick bait. With long pauses in between twitches.

Does that solve the spinning issue or the line twist issue?

I have been using the paddle style swim baits and one thing that helps is to use a screw lock type hook and be sure to rig the bait straight. I usually put the screw lock on and then allow the bait to hang naturally to find the entry point for the hook point.

This is where i used to mess up but you have to make sure that you go through that entry point straight. You may be centered on the insertion point but if the point comes out to one side or the other you will introduce line twists and rolling.

The weighted hook definitely helps with keeping the bait from rolling and also introduces that nice side to side wobble.

I also love the jerkbait style flukes with the split tails. I throw them everywhere and they have produced some of my biggest bass to date. They work great in heavy structure or open water. To get that nice darting action it is imperative to allow a little slack to remain in your line after you twitch. ALso if you are looking to work the bait more towards the surface, push the hook point a little further down than normal which will cause the nose of the bait to be higher up on the line. THis makes each twitch pull the bait up a little making it easier to work shallow.

One of the biggest smallies I've ever hooked came on a fluke rigged on a draggin head or flutter jig style head made for swimbaits.

Google Confidence Baits or Winco baits for example of their weighted jig.

But yeah, mostly I fish flukes (or Winco's river darters) on a 2/0 worm hook weightless.
