Power/scented worms vs unscented worms

Postby richg99 » Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:18 am

I've got this pond that I fish every few days. It is full of the dumbest and hungriest bass in Texas.

The last week or two I've caught larger and better bass than in most years. There are a lot of theories about why that is so, here in TX...but...that is another discussion.

For this last week, I've been using a couple of packages of OLD black Powerworms. They sat in my super-heated workshop for years. The packages were still intact, but the scent seemed somewhat less than a new package. So be it. They caught fish. Lots of fish.

This morning, as I dropped the yak into the pond, I realized that my last few packages of the magic worms were in the shop, and I was too lazy to walk the fifty feet to get them. I had a package of "ringworm" tan unscented worms with me. I told myself that they will work just fine.

I throw these worms, un-weighted, under overhanging trees and next to anchored paddle boats.

Well, to my amazement, they did seem to work well. EXCEPT for all of the missed bites; all of the instant rejections of the worm when I did my usual "tap; pull; tap; pull". I could feel the fish there, then they were gone. The ones that I did catch were lightly hooked. I missed more fish on jumps than is normal. Most of the fish were smaller than those caught just a few days ago.

So, my simple conclusion is that the Powerworms encouraged the fish to hold on longer; and attracted larger fish, rather than the smallest in the pond.

My answer is pretty much what all of the advertisements have been saying. It was just interesting to do my own experiment and prove the bait-makers right. I have no idea if the Powerworms are markedly better than any other scented worm, but scent does matter, IMHO.

regards, Rich

Last year I started adding scent{ Mega-Strike} to all of my un-scented plastics and I believe it made a BIG difference! If I canget a bass to hold on for 1/2 a second more, I feel I have a greater chance to stick him. Just my humble opinion. Thanks for sharing your observations Rich!

Good observation; I agree. That has been my observation.

I'm still a HUGE FAN of the Bio Edge Wands that we can get at HOOK 1. You just can't beat them for ease of operation and effectiveness. I totally agree that using a scent of some sort makes a difference in that extra bit of time the fish is willing to hold onto the lure... it makes all the difference in the world for me when slowly working soft plastics.

I think scent/salt/coffee/garlic or whatever makes a much bigger difference on longer profile baits. If you have ever seen a bass eat a plastic worm, they generally dont do it in one fluid motion like they do with a more compact bait (like a tube or craw). They grab the an end or middle of the bait, then suck it in. I think that while soft plastics dont give any negative queues, the scent may give a positive one for that brief moment when they pick it up and either suck it in or drop it.

I could be way off base but thats my take. I do scent lizards, worms and the like, I dont bother with tubes, craws and smaller profile baits. Just me

Oh don't get me started on Edge. I not only threw it away after one use, I threw the baits away cause I couldn't get the edge smell off. But... I just had a bad experience. I'm sure people hate the Lunker Sauce that I love so much. So apples to apples really. Scent does work, and in some cases can also deter a bite.
It really does seem a fish will strike with intention when a bait is scented properly, and maybe a half-hearted strike if not. At least that's what my brain wants me to believe.

oh crap, an hour 'til sun-up... time to go!

Actually I like Smelly Jelly, but just the crab scent. Works incredible for Pompano.

Add me in the pro-scent catagory and the fish will hold onto the bait extra time to get a hook set.
