I know a lot of people use spinning reels with surf rods but does anyone use ( or has anyone used) a conventional reel for surf fishing?

I use one 12ft long that's perfect for surf fishing on the famous "point" in North Carolina. I can sling my fish finder rigs a bit further with it!

Conventionals like Abu Garcia's 7000 were hot back in the day, Penn made a MagPower 980 that was pretty popular too...I threw all 7000's on my 12ftrs and I had one custom 13ftr that had a Penn 850SS (spin) and that thing was just ridiculous, way to heavy, you couldnt throw it all day.
All the hardcore surf guys throw conventionals, simply because of length, you can really launch em. Long distant casting competitions are all conventional.

What reel do you have on it?

There's a big spillway close to my house where a 97lbs catfish was just pulled out. One of my co-workers fishes there and does well with his surf rods. It seems like the guys who can sling baits closer to the other side (which is not accessible) seems to get into the bigger fish.

It's all conventionals for the distance casting crowd.
Abu 6500 CT's, TLS's and Slosh 30's
I've got an old Shimano on a 9 foot surf rod that I can pretty easily do 100 yards with 4oz and bait.

I use a penn 320gt, I think now it's a GT2, but it's great for slinging baits in the salt. If you are using it for catfishing I would recommend and abu C3; it's a bit easier to handle and holds adequate line for catfishing the James River. I use a St. Croix heavy rod and a C3 6500series (I think, I can double check tomorrow). I have landed 40+lb flatheads and blues no problem with it!
