I'm all about flipping and pitching shallow cover but it's now time for me to throw a 3/4oz football jigs, c-rigs and deep cranks.

I want to try deep water jigging spoons but I just can't make myself buy those heavy azz lead spoons. Anyone have any luck and at what depth?

Its usually a heat of the summer/dead of the winter technique. For Example, when the water is at its hottest or coldest points fish will move to the most stable water they can find and that's usually when they end up deep.

Deep, however, is a relative term. Deep on Watauga Lake in my area during these times is 60 or so feet. I've heard of spotted bass being even deeper. Whereas, deep on Lake Okeechobee is 8-10 feet. So that depends on your lake. However, I feel like spoons would really excel in truly deep water. In the 20-30+ range.

The BPS brand spoons are really good. They don't seem to foul up as much. Just use a snap swivel and replace the factory hooks with something slightly stronger and you are good to go.

You'll never know until you give it a try though, so get to it!

I would have to say crankbaits. I can catch fish on them and have more in my tackle bag than I care to admit to but I don't have that much confidence in them.
Swimbaits just really getting started on them this year so I haven't had much success so far.

I have to also agree on this one as well.......something about open treble hooks just scares me off for some reason. It could also be that I don't have the right rod for it either. For me, rod selection is a combination of what is affordable at the time and in stock, since I am most likely either enroute to the water or getting ready to go in short order. Most of mine are MED FAST and MED HVY FAST/XTRA FAST.

I have more Strike King Series 5/6 crankbaits than I care to admit to, plus add in a few Rapala Floater DTs and some Berkeley Frenzy ones......you could say that they pretty much collect dust in my world. The only cranks I currently employ are lipless SPRO Aruku Jrs. and a couple Manns -1s.

I need to build up more confidence and start throwing them regardless, but I won't do it until I get a plug knocker first.

Mine would be rattle traps. I can be fishing with someone throwing the exact same one, and I won't catch anything. I'll throw on a crank and be on the fish next cast.
