Speed and the humming it makes

Postby mcca78 » Sun Jul 29, 2012 12:57 pm

I know alot of people hate with a passion to throw spinnerbaits/cranks with braid, and everyone has a preference and or opinion, so Im not trying to open a debate on which is better. But for those that do use braid to throw these baits if you really pay attention to the humming it makes while winding, it can help you judge the speed in your retrieves. Try to listen at what sound (pitch) is comming out when you start to dial in fish, and If you keep repeating that same sound you know your in the same ballpark as far as speed.

Thanks for the tip, I've been seriously considering switching to braid for these techniques because with the inflating cost of tackle, I'd rather straighten a hook than lose a lure.

I might add that the braid is my mainline and that I use a leader.

I could see using leader on slower bottom bouncing techniques like wormin' or jigs but I wouldn't think it would make that big of a difference on moving techniques likes crankin' or spinnerbaiting, what's your experience been with this?

I tie straight to the braid for everything too. I think the majority of people who use a leader use it for a few reasons.
1-to hide their main line in clearer water
2-provide a little shock resistance
3-Better abrasion resistance in rocks, oyster beds etc...

I haven't seen a drop off in production when tying straight to the braid for all of my presentations and i am not a fan of having an additional knot in my system but i know plenty of people do and have caught big fish so it obviously works :)

The ONLY thing I don't like about braid is that it doesn't sink
like mono. Even with that i just compensate and will never use
mono again. And I tie straight on, no leader.

I've most always use a palomar knot when fishing with mono, but what is the best knot to use when you tie straight to the lure with braid?

That is a good tip!

but is it okay if my monofilament leader for spinnerbaits is about 150 feet long?
