Walleye is undeniably my favorite species to target. If you will be trolling, my favorite method is a crawler-harness with two size 4 to 6 hooks a few inches apart. I always make them myself with beads color coded with different spinners. Above the leader i attach a snap swivel that is free floating on the line. This is what i hook my weight into and this system allows you to change depths by simply attaching a different weight. Bc it is free floating on your line, there is room for it to swing around, spin, whatever, but not tangle your line. Hope this is helpful!

I have never targeted walleye but last week I caught my first. It was a 17.5 inch that was sitting in a deep water section of the Potomac. He was laying on the shaded side of the river up against a boulder. I threw a War eagle spinner bait in white and chartruse with double willow blades.

He was not huge but now I think I am hooked! This fall and Spring I will be throwing for them alot more.

If you can fish at night a black spinnerbait works well. Walleye will come into shallow waters at night to chase baitfish.

I imagine it is very different from lake to lake. Here, targetting them in bright, sunny conditions means going into the thick weeds and pitching into any space you can find. Small bass jigs work well around here.

A good trick for trolling that deep without specialised equipment is to get ahold of a downrigger clip. Attach 1/2 - 3/4 oz weight to the clip. You can just clip it to your line about 20' in front of any lure, then let out line to get to the desired depth. Once you have a fish on, just reel in to the downrigger clip, unclip it, and land the fish with no extra weight. If I am in trolling water, I always have a downrigger clip in my vest.

Tipping a jig with a minnow or crawler works good. Ive accidentally caught them on a Kalins White Grub.
