Anyone doing any crappie fishing (or know of any good places) this time of year in the Richmond, VA area?

Now lake anna, both warm and cold side.

Come mid to late Feb, upper end of tidal areas will start holding prespawn crappie.

I'm no crappie fisherman but I know some folks who have great success fishing the tree tops on the deep side of Briery Creek in Farmville.

I wanted to try and hit some crappie in a middle of a farm pond we fish in PG. What are the best lures for them? The smallest thing I have right now are beatle spins.

1/16th-1/8oz jig head and 1.5"-3" curly tail grub, Crappie Magnets, crankbaits, and I know it's not a lure but 2"-3" minnows under a slip float.

I know a spot in Suffolk and plan to hit it tomorrow or Thursday. Weather will be nice and I know where they like to winter in that particular lake! :D

Here in Michigan, we have good luck with the Lindy Little Nipper series of jigs. They are small hair jigs and come in a nice small 1/64 and 1/32 which seem to to work well in the early spring/cold water conditions. We fish them under a float and fish them plain or tipped with a small wax worm. Fish em' slow for non aggressive fish. They work year around but we tip them with a minnow in warmer water.
This year I thought about trying to tip them with some gulp or other crappie niblets etc but I don't have any experience yet with that to recommend. Would be nice if it works as well as live bait, less hassle in the yak.

I've got a spot in Williamsburg, where we've been having good luck. If that's close enough to Richmond for you, PM me, and I'll give you directions.

Hit one of the local lakes in Texas, yesterday. I haven't targeted crappie in over 45 years when my mom or older sister would drive me and a buddy to Lake Stamford, Fish Haven (floating barge with inside or outside seating for crappie fishermen). Always enjoyed it, a more relaxed type of fishing with lots of talking among the participants.

Image
Lake Palestine, Tx, beautiful sunny morning. Weatherman calling for wind and rain.

Doesn't look like rain to me.

Now that I think about it, the reason we would go to Fish Haven to fish was because it was raining and that would be the only place to fish with a roof over our heads and we wouldn't get stuck in the mud.

Not a lot of hot bite action, though I was on top of fish all day. More ones and twos, move to another spot and repeat. It was like playing a video game watching the fishfinder all day. Ended up with 7 keepers to 13.75. Met some nice folks on the water and traded crappie stories.

I'm not a fish eater, maybe three or four times a year, but I got a recipie from one of the guys I met...and used it last night. I'm now a fish eating fool.

Use pancake mix and bottle of your favorite beer...everything else the same. Just like the guy said, the fried batter is better than Long John Silver crumbs.

Nice report, I'll have to try that recipe sometime. THat rain looks like it was coming down pretty hard.
