I'm mostly into fishing for bass and catfish, however I've been doing a lot of trout fishing lately because of the easy access to a nearby creek. I've had the most luck recently with rooster tails, but I was wondering if anyone knows the best time of day for trout fishing in the winter? It seems like I'm catching them the most between 11 and 12, but after 12 it slows down.
Thanks!

This will sound funny, but I don't leave the house until noon most days when winter trout fishing. By then, most of the guys camped out on spots since before dawn have left, and you get whole sections to yourself. The sun has been up for a couple hours, warmed up some of the darker holes, and fish seem like they're more active. I generally fish to dusk.

Thanks for the advice! Maybe the fish are just being strange where I'm fishing. I hooked a huge one the other day, set the hook, but then he thrashed around so much he got off before I could pull him in. I'm going to try fishing for trout in the evenings.

I am with franco on this one. Unless i am fishing a specific hatch I prefer the afternoon when chasing trout.
Trout seem to be more opportunistic feeders and will hit baits that are presented properly.
I just dusted of the old 4wt and am gonna hit some spring creeks here soon mself

I agree with John, not just because he's a local expert, but also because it's been my experience as well in my last two years of targeting trout, that they are more apt to be on the bite during the winter during the warmest times of the day. Keep after 'em! It sounds like you're doing a great job.
