Tips for wind fishing?

Postby NextBigThing » Sun Feb 05, 2012 7:19 pm

Any tips for wind fishing? I was fishing along a bank with the wind blowing me into the bank and couldn't stay in the casting range , always too close and couldn't make good accurate throws.

If you are on a lake I really like this type of anchor setup.

If the wind is really blowing up a storm, I go with it and wade the shoreline taking the most wind. I will get out there and wing a spinnerbait hoping the current stirs all the big and little critters up.

I use a rudder and set myself up to drift towards the bank at an angle. If the wind is directly behind me it gives me a few more casts before I have to back out. If the wind is at any kind of angle I can usually drift the bank (holding my angle with the rudder) for quite awhile.

When on the river and looking at where I want to fish I try to always check wind before I go, If its blowing really good and I know this before I go, I will try to find areas on the river that are somewhat protected, sometimes its as easy as just fishing the other side, or driving a few extra miles to a riverbend that will protect me from the prevailing wind. Tucking in behind islands is always a good option as well. If those arent options then its a paddle- cast- paddle correction day, where good paddle techniques are the only thing thats gonna help.

All good responses addressing the boat control aspect.

As far as the actual fishing is concerned you may want to consider up-sizing your presentation to facilitate casting and to maintain contact with your lure and the bottom.

A drift chute coupled with an anchor trolly, and rudder can really help you in these situations. If not find a different place to fish that is more friendly to the wind. I have places that I just wont fish if the wind is 10mph or above. Good Luck

stay home or fish somewhere else.
I know it seems pretty drastic, but I've been doing a lot more of both this winter. Fishing somewhere else is my top suggestion. It's a little easier here in Charleston than in a lot of other places, but I'll take a look at the wind forecast and a map of the area. I'll plot wind vectors on the map and decide where to launch and where to fish.

I've gotten really tired of constantly fighting the wind, so better up front planning helps me deice if I can be completely sheltered by fishing a different area or if I can paddle against the wind on the way out and drift back.

Sadly, too many times the wind shifts during the day and I end up paddling against the wind both ways. :(

and if you're a river angler it always seems to blow upstream.

Yep. I'm a tidal river angler, so I get to battle a combination of wind and tide.

Wind and tide in same direction you just can't slow down and fish the areas you want to effectively.
Wind in one direction and tide in the other we get some lovely whitecaps and haystacks on the river.
