Rio Grand Flyline

Postby flflash » Fri Jul 20, 2012 8:31 pm

I was wondering if anyones useing the Rio Grand flyline our have any input on it.
I've used nothing but SA line for awhile but a few things about the Grand line intrigue me.
It's looped on both ends which should make for quick line changes without buying spare spools.
It's a half weight heavier than normal and has more weight in the head section than what I'm using. Will that make for better short casting and slow down my rod a bit?
It's a Dualtoned line, I don't know what that will help but it does look kinda cool :D
I can buy it 20% off list at my local flyshop. $75 flyline for $55 sounds good.

My biggest concerns are abrasion resistance and how well it will handle in warmer water?

Any thoughts will be appreciated!

I don't have any first hand experience with it, but a guy on another forum I frequent just suggested it for someone else because he loves it so much. He is in a warm climate, so I am sure it will perform well there. Yes, the half-heavy lines will slow your rod down if that's what you want. I just switched to the Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper line a couple of months ago and I love it. I prefer it over the SA mastery series as an all around line (meaning it roll casts well and shoots well). It is a dual-tone line and I really like that. But I use that feature for longer casts, so not if sure if you'll use it or not since you're asking about short casts. Basically, it just makes it easier to not strip in line past the head so you minimize your false casts, but you probably already knew that. I can whole-heartedly recommend the Bermuda Triangle Taper to you. It is a warm water line (hence the Bermuda in the title) that performs well at all distances for me.

I have several TFO BVK rods the heavier ones 6 & 8wt I Love! The lil 8 1/2ft 4wt is just a bit stiff in my opinion I tried it with a SA 5wt wf line which took to much of the crispness out of it, I was thinking a 1/2 weight line might just be perfect to get the feel I want.

I actually fish the 4wt most of the time, probably too much of the time :D it's just so much Fun with Big Bream, Small LM Bass it's Perfect for Suwanee Bass :D I've also caught American Shad, Sunshine Bass, Crappie and Speckeld Trout on it, Fun Stuff!

I use an 8wt BVK and the Bermuda TT. I haven't used a 4wt anything in a long time. I think you're right about the 1/2 wt line increase and for that price you should go for it.

I use Rio line on my musky set-up...#9 weight forward-floating. I don't have an overwhelming amount of experience using their line, I purchased it after a reccomendation from a friend. My experience with the Rio fly line has been great though...super slick, quality line.

If asked, I would reccomend Rio to a friend.

I went ahead and picked up the Rio Grand flyline for my 4wt this afternoon. Hope to sneak in a lil time on the water tomorrow and see how it feels.

Unless you are fishing for trout with it I would use the clouser line is made to cast big flies and to be fished in warmwater

Rio Grand WF-4F Flyline For Sale fished twice, make offer.

Nice Hi Quality line, I like the way its weighted it loads up fast graphite rods quickly and is very buoyant, the dualtone did'nt mean much to me but I now think All flylines should have welded loops on both ends! Very nice feature.
However it's obviousley designed for cold water applications in 90+ water temps it becomes gummy feeling and looses it's stiffness. Not something I can use in Florida :(

I'm also looking for a line that does well in the heat. I fished yesterday in 107 degree heat and my SA Bass line line SUCKED. It was so sticky in the guides that I kept checking to see if I had a wrap around the tip of the rod or something. It stuck to my hand really, really bad.

I was thinking of trying the RIo line because the dual tone just looks cool  :D and on their website, they specify a few lines that are designed for warm water. I'm thinking of trying their Bass fly line. They say it's designed not to wilt in the heat. Anybody ever try that one? It's hot here a lot more than it's cold, so I need a line that will do well when it's hot out.

fflash, why do you like the welded loop on both ends? How do you attach that to the backing? Do you have to unspool the whole line to do that? I can't see how that's quicker than tying a knot. Cumbersome, too. I must not be getting something.
