Sage Bass series

Postby flyfisher » Sun Feb 12, 2012 10:40 am

So last year i used my fly rod quite a bit for largemouth but as i got more into it i realized that mySage 7wt XP was just not big enough to 1) throw the big flies without playing chuck and duck all day and 2) have enough backbone to muscle the bass out of heavy cover as the main lake i fish has lots of coon-tail grass and lilly pads.

I see the Sage Bass original rods on sale since the new ones came out and have only heard good things about both series. One guy i talked to said the Bass II could cast a wet sock 50 yards....sounds pretty nice to me.

Anyone on here have any experience with either the newer or older model of Bass rods?

not the sage bass because it is a bit pricey for me, but i just picked up a redington predator 8 wt and it falls along the same principle . that thing will turn over a small chicken if i want it to and it is light enough that i think an all day trip will be okay. i hope to get it slimed this week by a mean ol mudfish in the okefenokee

Welcom to KBF :) I feel privelged to be your first post :)

Yeah the sage bass is a little on the pricey side but you can find the first series for a pretty good deal since the new version just came out.

I have heard good things about the reddington predator but i think my view is somewhat tainted since my buddy had one of their other rods and i didn't like it at all.

I guess i will have to go cast one of those too cause the price is very attractive.

thank you ! i reckon i spend so much time on forums i forget to introduce myself ! i just figured i would add my very lil bit of info  i was planning on getting a TFO mini mag but found the predators at a rediculous close out and could not resist. i am usually saddled behind a 3 or 5 wt in my kayak but i really wanted something that would throw the hair worms i have been tying or a stealth bomber with a dropper beneath it. the 5 would get it done but i really didn't like how hard i had to push to get the shot where i needed it. i love my short little 3 weight and have been toying with the idea of a "pool cue" type rod since handling the heat series at bass pro last fall. i know it may be early for the fly rod in the swamp but i figure i gotta try !

Wouldn't waste a dime on the Predator series until Sage make them less brittle went thru 3 of them and they give me a bunch of shit and that was when I had enough shit again and it sold it! Worse rod I had ever owned PERIOD!! Pay a little more and get the Bass series rod if you are bent on having such a Sage branded rod. Although they are not very fast rod rods that I like but are still nice casting rods for med distance. I had one but ended up selling it once Scott came out with their S4 which is a helva lot better rod with much better service to boot! Cant say the same with Sage tho.

Ok you are gonna have to clarify a little bit here.......you mention predator being brittle which is a reddington and then sage as the brand. then you say get a Bass series rod if i am bent on getting a sage. Then you say sage service is not good....

I know sage bought reddington but their blanks are not the same and their warranty departments are different. I mean mercedes and chrysler were the same at some point but i don't think anyone would say they are the same vehicles.

I have had a sage rod for years and have broken it 3 times and never had a problem with their warranty department.

I have heard good things about the Scott rods and the few times i fishe them i liked them but i noticed their S4 is a whole lot more than the bass series and not in the length or the weights i am looking for. I like the shorter length for storing in the kayak and i rarely make casts longer than 30-40 feet when fishing with the fly rod anyways.

Sage Bass series are on the same tooling as the low end FLi series and was told they were made in Taiwan while the Reddington Predator series are made in China. Scotts are all made in the USA and it matters to me where it came from but I know not all coming from overseas are not bad rods.
You dont need the S4 but their revamped A4 Series is what I would go for IMO. Best mid priced rod out there.

Interesting.

I just checked the Sage website and they state that all their rods are made in the USA.

I will have to cast a scott though as it has been a while since i fished one of their sticks.

If someone told you any sage rod was made in taiwain, or anywhere overseas, it is total BS. ALL sage rods are made in the US on brainbridge Island.

Sage Bass Rods Are killer awesome rods, Especially if you can get one for a good price, but its not a good rod for the kayak because of its length. Great rod if your fishing from a boat, Killer acurate, and can cast big flies with ease, and easy to pitch flies under docks and overhangs. you can't make far casts, but for what the rod is designed for, you dont need to cast far

I know phish compared the Sage Bass to the Scott S4, but you can't at all. And i love scott rods, have a G2 and an Original G, but you just can't compare a rod that was designed for throwing flies a short distance with big flies, that is a short rod with tournament legal length. And a rod that is designed as a big water rod, for casting heavy streamers LONG distances. The S4 will cast so much further than the Bass, But the bass is much more acurate, legal to use in tournaments, and can handle putting flies in tight spots.
