Smallmouth Fly Recommendations

Postby wfranklin » Mon May 07, 2012 12:00 am

I'll be taking a trip next week to the Buffalo River in Arkansas and was thinking of bringing the fly rod along. I've taken this trip numerous times and had great success on a spinning reel but have yet to try fly fishing for them. I was wondering what everyone thought some good flies to bring along would be. I'm gonna run to the fly shop in the next couple days and get some stuff to tie some up. Any advice is appreciated.

Tonight is the first time I noticed it was WHISKER! That makes so much more sense I've been thinking for a year, "man. I like bourbon, but this guy REALLY likes it!" I've even told friends of mine, "hey, did you see that post the Whiskey Wrangler made?"...Yeah I've even been trying to rationalize it... I thought maybe your job was to transport the casks around the distillery or something. -knobcreekman

Only thing missing, I think, is a floating diver fly of some kind. You've got top, middle, and bottom flies their, but no surface divers...like the Dahlberg Diver.

By the way, I'm planning on a trout fishing trip to northern AK myself, perhaps next spring (I wanted to go this Fall). Going the fish the White River and other streams for about a week. Would like to hear all about your trip when you get back.

CK baitfish are always good, i also like using a Sex Dungeon, personal favorite as well as the name. Craw patterns are always a plus as well

crawfish, nouse imitation, EP and clousers flies in brown/yeollow/white combination. Some large dry flies especially white and blonde Wulffs! My favorite are my own balsa sliders and hula divers in Yellow and white or tan. The Hula diver I make has gotten me 1000's+ smb in the last 4 years on them. Nothing else works so well.
