The reason I got a kayak

Postby rifishin » Wed May 16, 2012 10:00 pm

The reason i got a kayak was to get out and away from the crowded shores and small docks.I've always fished from them, and I knew I could do better if I only I was able to get to that sweet spot over by the cove or in my eyes the holy grail, a "drag and drop" spot.
Well tonight I went out quickly just to get a little more seat time, to get used to the casting and turning and reaching for tackle in back of me, and i finally caught a dink pickerel for my first fish from a kayak. I was excited as that little slimeball dove back into the weeds, and flipped and flopped.

I was on the water from about 6:15 to about 8:00 PM and only caught the dink,This pond was extremely thick and weedy all ready. I threw swim jigs, football head jigs a pegged devil spear and lastly a flick and shimmy wacky rig worm. I threw into heavy cover, i tried the edges, every which way.I was discouraged to say the least this was a spot that i found on google maps, a pond that I felt has no pressure.

The frogs were screaming, and I noticed that there was a ton of top water activity all kinds of bugs just skating around the top and not one break anywhere for these guys dancing on the top. I ask all of you, would you go back to this place again? Have you had a similar experience, gone back and killed it on another day? Should I look for another "drag and drop" spot on google earth? Thanks for any input.

First off, congratulations on your first catch out of the kayak!

Second, what is your gut feel on the spot? Do you think there are more fish to be had there?

I usually give a spot more time if my instincts tell me there are some bruisers about.

Good luck!

Happens to all of us.
Try fishing a frog, toad or mouse around those pads next time. I would also try a weightless ribbon tailed worm across the slop.

If it looks fishy, then I would stick it out a few more times. If you're still not impressed with what you've caught, then move on. ;)

One day does not define a spot. ;)

Tina and I have a favorite spot that we KNOW contains fish and we have fished it a number of times that we have caught zippo, zilch, nada, nothin, skunked.

We know that the pond holds fish because we have also caught dinks, bream so big they look deformed, crappie that spin the kayaks, and monster BASS that make world class fisherman stop and go, "Holy Crap!" (Tina caught five citations from that pond last year alone.) But, we still go back time and again and get skunked.

In your case, it may have been an off day, or the right day and the wrong time of day. If it looks fishy, work it. The frog advice is good, but you need to work the frogs.

You can buzz the frog across the pond in the center
Buzz it out from the edge of the grass
Toss it on the bank and tweek it into the water and then slowly swim it..

You get the drift...
If that doesn't work, try the worms, or swimbaits rigged weedless.

A good friend of mine has a six year old son and when they stepped out of a kayak one afternoon near us as we pulled our kayaks from the water for the day, we asked him if he caught anything.

He grinned, his face lighting up the parking lot. "NOPE" he said, "But I had a great time with my dad. It was a great day in the kayak, and we spent the whole day together. Besides, they don't call it catchin, they call it fishing."

Out of the mouths of babes... :)

The top water bug activity and no breaks.. is what kind of tells me not to go back, but that is the reason i am asking here other experience.

Looks like a nice spot, I'd go back just for that.
Wife is from Cranston, one thing that drives me crazy about RI is all the off limit lakes.

It looks good in the photo, I would go back. Try it at different times of the day and with different approaches.

I think you should go back. Give a couple more outings. Everyone here makes a fantastic point. The key might be to work that lake more than one evening.
Good luck.

X2
Can you night fish there? If so try it.
Another thing, that place holds pickerel which means it has the ability to support LMB.
I used to fish a place back in Ks. that I thought should hold some nice fish and went there numerous times and caught literally hundreds of fish there but none would break the 3# mark. Then one day I un-locked the lake and started catching nice fish out of there and she rewarded me with some fish over 5#. There is no replacement for time on the water and some determination. I kept going back because there was no reason in the world why the place shouldn't hold bigger fish.
Sometimes you just gotta pay the fishin' gods with a skunking.
