Sunday on the Tallapossa. Redeye, Spotted Bass or Both?

Postby BamaFan » Tue May 22, 2012 6:31 pm

Had a fun sightseeing & fishing trip on the Tallapoosa Sunday. We launched about 10:00 and did an out and back trip up river. The water was nice and clear and the fish were cooperative whenever I managed the time to cast a line. I ended up catching 5 Redeye Bass and 10-12 Spotted Bass. I also caught one that I wasn’t 100% sure of. It had a marbled belly and some light blue markings like a Redeye, but no white borders on the fins and the dark side markings like a Spot. Maybe it was some type of hybrid Redeye/Spot. We had a great time enjoying the beautiful scenery and relaxing in the shade on a warm Sunday afternoon. This is another one of those places where you always have a good trip even if the fish don’t bite. Some pics from the day.

This was the first or second Spot I caught. While removing the hook, I noticed something in it’s mouth. It had a big crawfish in it’s throat. That made me throw a magnum craw for a little while!

Here is the fish I that looked an awful lot like a cross between a Redeye and a Spot.

The last picture is a tree that we took a break under to sit in the shade and eat a snack. We looked up and saw what was hanging in that tree and paddled away as quietly as we could!!!

Thanks A.J. Yep, I took the fly rod but only got to use it a little. If you look close at the pictures where I'm holding up the spots, you can see my fly rod case down next to my seat. I tried a new fly I got called the "Bream Killer" and only got 2-3 hits on it. The wind got up pretty good, so I put the fly rod away. The big spots were schooling in one place, but the wind and current kept moving me off that spot and then they just quit biting! :(

You've sure got some sweet skinny water spots in your area. Beautiful scenery.

As far as the one fish is concerned I'm going to say its a spot. I've caught a few that looked very similar.

Great pics as always. What is the best way to carry a flyrod along on a yak since obviously the reel wont fit inside the pvc like the handle of a casting or spinning rod will. Do you carry it broken down in two pieces and then asemble it on the water?

The case I've got fits perfectly down the wide flat top rail of my Ride 115. It's not quite as easy to carry in the Tarpon, but I manage. The case is the kind with a reel pouch attached. You just break the rod down into two pieces and the reel can stay attached, which makes it easier and faster to assemble on the water. I attach the clip on the carrying handle to the ring on one of my seat straps just in case it falls overboard going through rapids. ;)
