Casting for distance

OK, got a dumb newbie fly casting question: I get that the double haul is the general cast for distance but what do you do when you are false casting and realize you need more line? Do you strip more off the reel mid cast (If so what's the best way to do this?) or lay the line down and strip more line start casting again?

Strip line off the reel as you false cast and "give" a little as the rod loads up....backcast or forecast....doesn't matter which. You are simply feeding a little more line at a time until you have out what you need. Naturally, the more line you have out, the longer it takes for the line to transition front to back and back to front, so your timing needs to slow down in relation to how much you have out. Obviously, practice this in the yard before you attempt it on the lake.

It's amazing too, that as you get good at it, you can do your haul and strip line off the reel at the same dang time... it's a sweet trick and one of the things that makes fly fishing so cool....

Catch fish or not you can look back on the day and remember certain casts, presentations or spots on the stream or river ... and count the day as well spent.

Come on down when you can sneak away and we'll work on the haul, double haul, and accuracy. Whatever Miss T and I can show you that you feel will help your casting. We can start in the grass on the range....then perhaps slip over to bear creek or sandy... there aren't any fish on the range...

It's more fun to grass cast with a couple friends and we can all improve.

Ah, the good ol' double-haul line-peel. Once you get the feeling for it, it'll come easy. It's most definitely the only way to get more line out on the fly (literally?).

I use a stripping basket , Pull out more then enough line then I know I need , then I don't have to worry about messing up the cast .

So when practicing in the yard do you guys use no leader line right

Actually, I use the right amount of leader for the type fishing I would be doing and a fly with the hook cut off, so the feel of the cast is consistant. I save the old flies that have been beat up from fishing and cut the curve of the hook off so they don't snag in the grass.
