First I got a boat and got familiar with paddling. Then I bought a 7' medium spinning rod and reel and some soft plastics, including finesse worms, crawfish, and salamanders. I went fishing for the first time yesterday with my new gear. I lost count of how many fish I caught, but around ten. They were all small except one. That one was a good looking thick fish! I got it into my boat. It was flopping around between my legs with me trying to grab it when it flopped out of my boat. It took the lure with him. I think the line must have broke because the end of the line that I had left wasn't kinked like the knot came untied. I think the line must have gotten knicked as it swam around a tree branch as I was getting it back to my boat. I wish I could have held it to see how long and heavy it was, and I especially wish I could have removed the hook and soft plastic from its mouth. All in all, I would have to consider this to be a successful maiden voyage. Much thanks to Jeff Little for providing the guidance from afar.
