For bass, I'm a huge fan of 2 lures offered by Secret Weapon Lures - The Buzzerbait and the Sidearms Spinnerbait.
The Buzzrbait is a buzz bait with a small spinner blade behind the buzzer. The advantage of this is that it provides lift, so I can fish this buzz bait slower than a plain one. Additionally, that spinner blade looks like a small fish following the buzz blade, so a fish tends to strike at that instead of the buzz blade itself, resulting in more hook-ups. Finally, and this is just my opinion, but I seem to hang this lure up less. I think it's because the blade riding above the hook seems to make it a bit more weedless.
The Sidearms spinnerbait is a favorite because it is so versatile. Instead of 2 or more blades riding inline on one wire arm, this one has two blades in tandem, each on it's own arm. This allows me to put on blades of different colors, shapes or sizes and interchange them at will. More importantly, because of the way the bait rides with these twin arms, if I speed up my retrieve, the bait doesn't roll on its side because of the torque of spinning blades on one arm. The head design also aids in planing, allowing you to keep the bait near the surface with a slower retrieve.
Both of these lures allow me to fish slower, which is really important this time of year. The water is cold enough that the bass are still a bit sluggish and I also want to keep it in the strike zone longer.
An intangible, but really important to me, is that this company supports our military in ways that others don't, regardless of the economy. They have been a sponsor of Warriors On The Water for the past 3 years and have special purchase programs for current and retired military. http://www.secretweaponlures.com
