Eric, What kind of dog is that and how does he do with large birds like geese? I had a long haired dog before and use to hate the burrs in the hair!! I used to hate combing them out constantly. Do they get in his fur much?

Zac, look in to Force Fetching. You are going to think it's mean when you first start but it will take an non young dog and break them to the process. Obedience is key for a hunting lab. Sit, stay and honor other dogs. If they dog will not sit and stay, you will get extremely frustrated, let me tell you. They want to break and take off when birds land, or you shoot.

Look at the book "10 minute retriever". It covers the basics and how your dog needs working every day, but 10 minutes is more than enough. Start with sit and stay before doing anything!! Most dogs just need to be excited to do it to pick up birds.

My lab in this picture loves hunting more than me! Now he is retired as hunting and cold weather just ruins his hips. He's is 10 and would gladly go if I let him. I still get the "Can I go?" look in the mornings when getting dressed. I let him carry a birds around after I come home while I am cleaning them now and feed him a goose leg here and there. Retirement perks, don't you know.

Not to answer for Eric but it looks like a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. They are pretty good dogs for both upland and water fowl.

Yes Tarrin is a Griffon, she's 9 and I hope has 2 or 3 more years of hunting as the vets put her as very fit, but she is slowing down.Burrs arnt that bad their coat balls it up and usually they chew them out before we are even home. I've got an 11 month old pup learning the ropes right now. I wasn't going to take the Commander out right away, but I got to playing with it and discovered it hold as many decoys as my predator so I'm trying it out on tomorrows opener assuming I don't strike out on the draw, I'm hunting a managed game area near my house. gear loadout- me and Tarrin, gun blind bag blind material dog stand 4 motion decoys and poles. Decoys- 1 widgeon, 3 Blacks, 6 mallards, 6 gadwalls, and 6 teal and Either 6 butt up feeders or 6 rester and surface feeder mallards depending on the zone I get so 28 decoys. not bad at all.
