4/23 update: Trip blog now on-line http://teamdevilsriver.blogspot.com

12/1 update: Added Ray Benash to the team. Ray's a fellow PA kayak angler with a ton of seat time fishing out of a kayak. W2N will appreciate this. Rays a SINK guy!... oh yeah! Currently I'm working on a blog so that friends, family members and other kayak anglers can follow our trip as it unfolds. I'll post up the link when it's fully functional.

Trip Overview

During the first night of my kayak fishing boot camp a Tom, Brent and I were enjoying some adult beverage and checking out kayak fishing video on youtube just to pass the time. We all had seen some video of kayak fishing on the devils river previously and , for whatever reason, that became the topic of our discussion. After a few minutes of talking about how great it would be to fish the river I said to Brent and Tom... hey.. Lets just make plans to go! what do you think? It didn't take but two seconds for both of them to commit to the trip.

Well, after a few months of researching, logistics planning and budget projections the trip is locked in this spring! The best way to describe the river is... "a desert oasis". The pristine waters flow though a seriously arid and rocky environment. The river is also EXTREMELY limited in terms of access. It also appears we are in for a 2-3 hour drive on dirt roads just to get access to the river. The good news is that there are some serious smallies and largies in this river.

5 of us (Team Devils River) will be making the pilgrimage to Texas via motor home. The trip will take us about 1.5 weeks allowing for 4 days of fishing and camping on the river. We decided to drive so that we could take our own kayaks, fishing gear and camping gear. The five man team consists of the following kayak anglers. I'll also include their river chariot of choice for the trip:
Brent Schnupp, Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120
Tom Cadwalder, Wilderness System Ride 135
Juan Veruete, Wilderness Systems Ride 115
Ray Benash, Dagger Black Water
TBA (filled but waiting to announce)

We will have a few other cool announcements related to the trip so stay tuned! I'll just update this post as things develop. We will definitely be providing ways you can keep tabs on our trip as it unfolds. Believe me... between the five of us we have some serious technology capabilities. It's going to be awesome!

Here's a video link to give you an idea of why we want to make the trip.... Kayak Fishing Heaven!

If the first video wasn't enough..check this out....

Sounds like an awesome trip. That's on my bucket list of places to kayak fish. Maybe one of these days. Looking forward to your reports.

That will be one heck of a trip. But the quality of the smallie and fish would probably be worth it.

That's a trip I've been thinking about taking myself. The huge smallmouth there would make the long drive worth while.

I've seen those videos and read about that river before. Sounds like great fun. Will you be stopping at other locations to fish along the way?

I'm sure you already know this but TexasKayakFisherman.com has a lot of info regarding the Devils. If I remember correctly there are quite a few laws about trespassing and overnight camping. Just FYI.

Can't wait for your report.

Definately a beautiful river. Brady is a member of another forum that I'm on, he posts up some great reports, and videos. I would love to fish and spend some time on that river.
