Had fun on the Wando 2-18-12

Postby Too Busy » Sun Feb 19, 2012 2:54 pm

I hit the water yesterday morning to fish the falling tide and shoot some video.

I didn't find fish until the last hour of outgoing and they were staged DEEP next to an oyster bar. Went 5 for 6 in an hour. Smallest was 20" biggest was 38 and change with a fanned tail, 41 pinched.
My best red on the Wando. :D

Here's some vid including a MUCH shortened version of the 20 minute fight.

The big girl gave the 4000 battle a workout.

Well done Tommy - quite a fight there. I think you would have had to un-beach yourself from that bar if it had made much more of a run on that initial take. She spooled you pretty good it looked like.

Outstanding Red! Image

Tommy, I heard you say you where using a 4000 Battle with PowerPro, but not what pound braid??
For my spinners I'm using two Battle 3000's & a Conquer 4000. The Conquer has had a good sized NMZ Red (36") on, but neither of the Battles have really been tested with any truly "BIG" fish.
Hope I'm not under-gunning myself with the 3000's.

LT
The Battle is spooled with 30# Power Pro tied to a 20# fluoro leader. I pulled the specs on the B4000 and it has a max drag of 13 lbs, so I was WAY outgunned compared to the Okuma Trios that I normally fish. My little T20 has 18 lbs and the T40 has 20.

It may not seem significant until you're sitting there watching line disappear off the spool. On the first run I watched the spooled diameter shrink about 1/2 inch in just a few seconds.

I cut the section out of the video where I pulled my stake out pole and moved the yak out to floating and just held it in place with my feet over the side. I could see the spool with about 10 wrap left before she stopped on the second long run.

The total run time on that fish was just under 20 minutes from hook set to carrying the net back to the yak.

I've got 20lb on the Conquer 4000 and 15 on the Battle's. Think I'm going to load the 4000 with 30lb and load on of the Battles with the 20lb. Thanks.
