2/23/12 4lb 4oz shoalie and some more fat spots

Postby LowHybred09 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 9:50 pm

Had another chance to squeeze in a coupkle of hours of fishing in before dark today. I had recently resupplied our jerkbaits including a lucky craft pointer which I had never used before. Also stocked up with my rogues, the suspending super rogue, it's llike 6-7" long and is kind of like big bait fishing just not a swimbait or big jig/plastic. The pointer caught my first fish, a small largemouth off of a wooded bank before the shoals. Then I had another fish grab it as I popped it off of a rock but it came off just as quick. Then I swithced up to the rogue and my first fish on it was a fatty. It came off of a tree that had a good bit of current going over it and it was maybe 4 ft deep. The spot slammed the rogue and began peeling line. I have to set the drag loose because I am using rather light line for these river bass in fast current. The fish was 3lb 1oz but was barely 17" long. Huge belly! On the way back up the river I hooked a few small spots, two came from the exact spot on back to back casts. Then as the sun set I approached the last good shoal and began working my jerkbait across the current and then all the sudden I was hung, well I thought I was hung but then my line started running down current. It was tough because I was sitting in an eddie and the fish was out in the current and it was pulling like a train. I could see it was a big shoal bass so I let it run. After a looooooong fight I eventually worked it back to my yak and into the net. I let out a holler because it was my first shoalie over 4lbs this year at 4lb 4oz. The fish has a gut too, was fat and healthy. Was a great way to end the evening.

Very Nice!!! I really need to get back over that way and try to catch some more Shoal Bass. I had a blast fishing the Flint last year! I hear the Ocmulgee is even better.

Weren't you throwing Rapala J-11's and J-13's a lot last year? What made you switch over to Rogues? Have you tried the Rapala Husky Jerks in the HJ12 or HJ14 size? They are a little higer priced, but I've never had the bill just fall off any of them. I did have a BIG Gar rip the bill off one!

I still throw them too, it's just not time yet. The water is still cold so the suspenders are doing it. Really last year was the year of the bullshad for me. The year before was the J11 and J13. Really just have learned to use bigger baits to catch bigger bass and that has been the natural evolution. My first rapala was the J9, then eventually graduated to the J13. The bullshads simply outfish all these other lures I mentioned when the water is warmer.

I think that the Rogues have a tighter wobble too. I makes for a better cold water presentation. Nice fish man!

Exactly. I think the rogue has a tighter woble than a lot of jerkbaits that can reach the same depth. For that reason I love them when the water is still cold. Just seems to be a better fish catcher for me but like anything in fishing, confidence has a lot to do with the outcome of a situation.
