2/23 found em!! 9 pieces of bronze

Postby mcca78 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 10:31 am

After 3 Feb skunks, and the smell on me getting worse, floated the river yesterday, Unseasonably high temps mid 50's, low but rising water at 42 degrees, wind gusts in the plus 20mph made it difficult in spots. On the water by 8am, and it was beautiful out b4 the wind reared its head. Made my way to first location, pounded the heck out of it, zip. Continued looking, fishing any spot that looked fishy to me, still nothing, then thoughts of another skunk kept creeping in my head as I looked at the time, right around 1:30 and the wind really blowing good at this point, and alot of river in my rearview, had to fight myself, I knew what I was using was going to work when I actually found them so changing tactics wasnt the answer. Finally got 2 on a suspending jerkbait total deadstick, that 400lb skunk was outa the yak. So for the next hour or so tried to reproduce in that local but nada. Had to make a break downriver to get closer to the take-out, and try to make some headway in the wind, then wind abrubtly stopped, right around 4pm, the next hour they turned on, had smallie smash a jerkbait on a twitch, hmm repeated it this instead of deadstick, after like a 5, 10sec pause I twitched it, again another decent smallie came to hand. Missed one on one of the next cast and followed it with plastic rigged on a draggin head, and it was on. The final hour when the wind came to a stand still, I got 3 more on the SJB and 4 on bottom bouncers, they were in a trench followed by a taper up of a long slow pool.
Same areas I hit all thru the day, but this one had em in it :D

Congrats buddy. Always feels good to get that winter skunk out of the kayak. Seems like the PA smallies like the suspending jerkbaits.

Very nice! I hope to have some reasonable water levels soon so I can take a crack at them. Thanks for the inspiration!

Good job man! February has been the worst month for me too, so I am hoping to get some redemption myself this weekend.

Congrats---sounds almost like the pattern Juan (PA Smallies) and Jeff Little were catching them on when they were out on Presidents Day. Slow and steady always wins the race!

Just the kind of encouragement I needed to get out of the house fight a little wind on the water.
