I've been tying these for several years, and down south have caught LMB, bluegills, gar, pickerel, and other stuff on them. Since moving back "north" I've found they are a great SMB style too, of course. Add rock bass and fallfish also.

This past winter I bought the River Road Creations foam cutters for this fly, which makes makes them a whole bunch easier to tie.

For moving water, I like the tail to be just bucktail with some krystal flash, and I leave the rubber legs off. Most times when tied like that, I can get a really good tight wiggle action. No two are exactly the same. For still water LMB and stuff, I tie them fully dressed with silicone legs, splayed hackle tails, weedguards, etc.

JSlager, I agree you have way too much material at the stern of your fly.

yes that's true, but we must take a look where it came from--- it's a foam (therefore easy) version of a Dahlberg Diver which was first promoted by Larry Dahlberg in the late 70s or early 80s. The Diver certainly wasn't even the first floating bug to be tied specifically to dive and wiggle, but it was the first which was widely known.

A lot of folks shy away from spinning and stacking deer hair, which is unfortunate because it is very rewarding. It IS somewhat of a letdown though when you hook a skinny 18" pickerel who's teeth knife through a deer hair bug you spend a full hour crafting... when you know you could have tied 6 or 7 foam divers in the same time and caught the same fish!

Hey, the Stealth is such a good fly that I dropped the $60 or so on a set of cutters just for it, but I won't stop tying deer hair bugs and divers.

This is exactly what happens and what pushed me to stealth bombers exclusively. The worst is when it would happen on the first cast. Now with a bomber I've only lost a few cents and 5 minutes of my life. I do admire people who are skilled at spinning and stacking deer hair though.

gotta disagree-- the WORST is when I hang an hour-plus deer hair bug in a tree on the first cast!! Done that more than a few times....
