3/31 or 4/1 Potomac trip

Postby devildog4329 » Thu Mar 29, 2012 3:16 am

Anyone hitting the Potomac Saturday or Sunday? I know it is supposed to rain on Saturday but depending on how bad I might go out. Also thinking about a Sunday trip. Looking to stay between Damn 4 and Brunswick.

Or maybe a trip to my special spot.

If anyone wants to get something together send me a message.

I am up for a shot. Dam4 through Taylors is shallow and hard to bottom fish with this water level. Snyder's to Shepardstown is better in higher water, but slower for fishing to me lately, but Bigger lures can be productive done there. ;)

Shepardstown to Dargen is good slower water in the middle and bottom. I am up and think Sunday might be better, as long as the rain is not crazy on Saturday. I can go Saturday, but think a high of 56, rain and not sun is going to make for some cold hands!!

If I was you, I'd be watching the USGS guages before making that choice.

Water's up & pushy.

Flat water area's should be safe.

Was going to be my suggestion. The gauges when i looked yesterday was showing close to 5' for Potomac at Point of rocks.

Find some slack water areas and shoreline eddies and you should be good!

Rob, I will give you a call friday or Saturday to see if we can get something worked out for a tip on Sunday. It would have to be after church or the wife might make me repent. :D I am also thinking that one of my favorite creeks might be in need of some attention.

OU and Hookup, I will definetly keep an eye on the gauges. I am not a fan of high or fast water. I like shallow and slow myself.

Point of Rocks was one spot I was thinking of hitting Sunday. What levels are considered high and or I saw where you can get alerts for certain levels what level should you be concerned?

HookUp might have a better idea of this. I think this is one of those things that you don't know till on the water. A reading of 4' might not seem too much, but depending on the area, it could be covering rocks up & putting them just below surface & just out of sight. But still able to catch a kayak.

I've floated the river when the POR guage read above 9'.

Caught fish, had no issues until I felt something scratching the bottom of my boat and noted it was a submerged TREE :o

Then I realize that may have not been a good idea.

POR @ 5' is pushy, fun, predicatable for fishing, but pushy.

But POR @ 4' can be more dangerous depending on your skills. You float over nervous water and a ledge or rock is just barely covered, not paying attention, then a problem could arise.

Low water levels running rapids offer the opportunity to flip more than high ones because when the water's high, you have a pillow of water over the edge a yak can float over.

Only you can decide what's safe for your comfort in a yak. And the only way to figure that out is to know what the river level is where you'll be floating, then do it. Keep a log and you'll figure out quickly what's safe for you.

But I'll still stay POR @ 5' is pushy.

One of the reasons why I have a pontoon boat. If the water's up, and I'll be in an area with allot of rapids, I'm in the toon.
