Gettin' paid to fish Maryland

Postby archeryrob » Thu Apr 05, 2012 12:41 pm

Nope, not talking about Jeff or Chad here. You can get paid for fishing in Maryland. You have to catch and kill and snakehead and then send in the hero shot.

The headline is horribly incorrect. There is no bounty. If you read to the bottom, catching, photographing, and killing snakeheads and then submitting it to Maryland DNR makes you eligible for a DRAWING for prizes. It does not mention how many prizes there are or what they are other than a $200 Bass Pro Shop gift card.

LOL, second post about this. You send your photo in, and you get entered in a drawing. One Gift Card, one fishing license, and one park pass. PER YEAR!

Here's last year's winners: http://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/news/ ... ory_id=214

Hopefully the fishing access areas of Maryland won't look like ours, except instead of proud little trophies of dead gobies left to rot in the sun and stink up the place, you'll have huge, dead snakeheads. Awesome, another brilliant move by the DNR.

Once an invasive is there, it's there to stay - ask the giant hogweed.

I'll say one thing, and some of you will groan.....suppose the worst happens, and snakeheads 100% supplant bass. OK? They grow big. They bite lures. They put up a great fight. They taste great. Wow, that would suck. I guess I'm a glass half full guy!

Seriously though, they aren't going to supplant bass, but they could screw up a pond or small lake pretty good. Hey Paul, think Beaver Fart lake....

And that article? Faux News at it's finest. I bet that guy writes for the Huff Post under a pseudo-name.

That's how we ended up with them. Seems some entrepreneurs hatched a fishy plan cut import costs on fillets.

I agree. The time to "do anything" about snakeheads in Maryland and Virginia has long passed and They're here to stay. Should measures be taken to prevent or slow their spreading to other bodies of water? Of course, but they'll spread anyway.

Snakeheads are coveted gamefish in other parts of the World, and eventually they will become the same here.

Scary to handle though...like a shark..

and if anyone here hasn't seen Mo' Bass catching one, well, I guess you hibernated a little long this winter, eh?
