Windy day on the Doah

Postby beard » Sun Apr 08, 2012 9:53 am

Hit the Doah on Friday in hopes of landing a few smallies. Had a full moon so I was hopeful and I tried to ignore the wind in the forecast. Well the wind was blowing good. The "gusts" of wind were more like 15 mph wind that lasted for minutes on end. I started fishing a tube and a draggin head but no luck. The wind was blowing me up river and also blowing a big bow in my line. Couldn't keep the boat on spot for long and almost imposible to feel your bait with the wind. After about 2 hours I made a switch, which I should have made sooner.

Went with a 3" white grub rigged on a SUPER sharp jig head that Hookup gave me back in Jan. Fished it all of 5 minutes and boom fish on!

Had some better pics but couldn't get them to upload.

Fish went 14" and was in curret. This fish was caught between two rock ledges dead center of the river. I guess the fish were stacked on this current funnel as two casts later I got this little guy.

Notice the net? I'm not putting my thumb anywhere near that jig hook

I lost another small fish in this area and then moved on. Saw a big rock on a flat and cast the grub past it. Swimming it by got a strike from a ~16" smallie which promptly jumped off. Overall it was a hard day with the wind but I got a couple to the boat. Every smallie I hooked jumped ALOT so it was hard to keep them buttoned up in the wind.

Nice job on finding a way to catch them in that wind!

I'm not sure which is worse, a strong wind blowing up river or down river. Each seems to have it's own way of making it difficult to make an effective presentation.

I think wind is one of the biggest obstacle you can face in a kayak...Glad to see you were able to overcome that and still put a few in the yak! WTG!

Wind has killed me on the past two trips. Last week wind pushed us all over the local largemouth lake and this week it was on the river. Wind is a blessing and a curse fishing out of a yak
