Cool mouse pattern I tried

Postby TheCream » Mon Apr 16, 2012 12:35 pm

Here's the link to the video on the how-to:

http://coloradoskiesoutfitters.com/vide ... g/hoodrat/

I trial ran this fly yesterday briefly on a small public pond with some bass and had 3 strikes on it and landed one small bass. I tied two more last night and added some rear rubber legs that protrude from the gap between the foam pieces. My trial colors were kind of a light tan and a dark brown. I think it's going to be a good surface producer, it looks really good in the water and casts easily.

I really like that one. I'd have to watch this and move the tying board in by the computer and tie it a couple times. I'd tie it on the 3/0 or 4/0 hook for the waters I fish and slay the big ol bass or GAR..

What I really like is how this one rides on the water. The chenille and rabbit strips help pull it down a little off the surface and the foam back basically hangs it right at the surface level. It looks incredibly tempting.

My trial runs were on a #2 Mustad 3366, smallish body profile, I intend to do some larger versions, as well.

Cream, thanks for sharing this. I just tied a size 10 using 1/16" foam. I'm thinking I'll use 1/8" thick foam for the size 6. Not bad to tie at all and fairly cheap to tie. Look like it'll crush 'em topwater.

Last night I was playing around with the mouse to test a couple of little changes I made to the pattern. It was a poor night, conditions-wise, chilly and damp with temps in the high 50's here in SE Ohio. On my 3rd cast with the mouse, I saw a boil coming at the fly, bass smashed it, set the hook and the bass went airborne and threw the fly. Seeing that, I stuck with it and managed two more explosions, both pretty violent, and hooked/landed both fish. So in poor conditions in chilly water on a heavily fished public lake, I should have had 3 bass on this fly. I'll take that as a good field test!

Was this a size 2? how heavy was it when it got wet? was the 7 wt just right? Could you get away with a 6 wt or would an 8 wt be better? I'm encouraged by your test

My test went better than expected as well. 40 MPH winds forced me to rig up my TFO BVK 8 weight with Wulff Triangle Taper Ambush line just to roll-cast. My size 10 Hoodrat was CRUSHED by this Brookie who fought like crazy. Retreive was a quick short strip that popped. FUN ! Tied a couple more size 10 Hoodrats today.

Forgot to mention that the chenille tail was stripped down to black tread rather quickly. I may look for some thin rawhide shoe laces to do the tail with. Any better ideas for the tail Cream?
