Some of the baits that I've been using lately have some sort of coating on them but they do not smell at all. On the other hand, I've had great success with others that had sent on them. Go figure.

I am of the belief that a great variety of things induce fish to hold onto the bait longer, seek it out by smell or noise, etc. That coating may make it feel tougher; may make sure it doesn't get all soft and squishy...who knows?

One thing I can be sure of, is that the manufacturer added it for some reason. No one adds costs to a production line without a real purpose.

I'm a definite believer in using the scents having done my own experiment with Fish Formula 25+ years ago on crappie and later that year using Fish Formula to win a walleye tournament in Ontario, Canada.

In the salt water rarely used spray on stuff except for a few times on bone fish, preferring instead to go with baits that didn't smell to me but were made with natural fish oils or actual shrimp.

Now that I'm back in freshwater, I'm using the Bang Garlic or buying stuff that is already enhanced...YUM YUM.

If anyone every needed to mask their scent it would be me...I'm constantly smoking, reapplying sunscreen, and insect proofing my hands.

If you really want to up the number of "non-rejected" bites you get, try this stuff: http://www.kicknbass.com/
Just don't get any of it on your clothes, or you won't be allowed back into the house.
