Lake Athens

Postby lconn4 » Wed May 09, 2012 4:39 am

Got up early yesterday morning and headed back to Lake Palestine...wasn't feeling it and just kept driving past my usual turn off and on up 175 another 20 miles to Lake Athens. I'd heard good things about it and after a quick stop at the local Walmart there, I was ready to give it the old college try.

Spoke to Jerry, the old timer that runs the bait shop next to the public ramp. I told him what the deal was and he told me where to go. Usually when someone tells me to go right around the corner I go the opposite direction as far as possible, but today I wasn't in the mood for doing it my way and was very receptive to staying out of the wind and near the ramp.

I tried the baits he suggested (pop R topwater and pumkin seed worms) with no luck. Tried a few of my own concoctions and finally managed to catch a fish on a Bass Magic swimbait. I'd bought a pack of them last week and caught a few fish on them. Today I had the bigger ones. Caught a good one soon after and the rout was on.

Beautiful little lake and nice double ramp, bait shop, and restaurant next door.

Believe it or not the fish were still not aggressively taking the bait. Only the one I caught on the weightless fluke (jr. fish of the day) hit bait near the surface and the rest on a controlled drop or glide at least a foot below the surface in two to five feet of water. I'm hoping I've figured out a retrieve that is working on the bass that have been meelie mouthing my spinner baits for the last 3 weeks. Never got a strike or one I could see or feel using War Eagle Buzzbait and my go to Perch colored double willowleaf Stanley Vibra Shaft spinner bait. Half of my hookups were from watching my line as the fish were continuing towards me after the bite. Ended up having to switch my bait to higher geared reel and stiffer rod to make catching up and setting hook quicker. It made a huge difference.

Any way I left the water around 9 p.m. and stuck around the ramp and spoke to the guy running the weekly Lake Athens Bass Tournament. May be competing against the power boat guys next week.

Great report as always and really nice looking lake. Just looks like the right place to fish.

I've been having great luck with the swim baits too. I think every single strike has been with the bait on the fall or glide, or after it hits the bottom. I am finding that fishing it like a worm, with the lift and let fall action, seems to get their attention more.

I am loving the salt action but those fish make me want to get back in the sweet water this week. :D

Those are some quality fish right there. I have those same Bass Magic paddle tails in both the shad and gold colors. I also have the same Arkansas Shiner color Zoom Flukes. Those are great baits to have in the arsenal.

Great report Louis! Athens is one of the best small lakes around northeast Texas. It's known for schooling lmbs in the 3-5 lb range in early summer. Also, the freshwater fisheries center is there. Always kinda cool when you go there to realize that there are some 13-16 lb fish somewhere on the premises! I have a feeling that Athens gets some undocumented stockings from there... Some MONSTER bluegills in that lake too.

Purtis Creek SP is just down the road and I almost always end up stopping there when I head in that direction since its one of two places in Texas where a sharelunker bass has been caught from a kayak... Truth is, though, that Athens is a much better fishery these days. The few times I've passed up PC in favor of Athens I've had really good days. Should do it more often. I think Athens is a place where the A Rig would work really well.

I like the way the larger sized Bass Magics fall. Had bought the smaller ones in gold last week and felt they dropped too fast and lost all action (sunk) when you slowed your retrieve. Seems they have the same hook and weight as the larger model making it less workable in my opinion.

We need to plan a trip somewhere Tom! Another over nighter with whoever can make it.

Sure do like slot lakes, take home under 14 and over 24, leaving all the chunky ones to grow even larger (another Monticello). What a big difference that makes!

Last week there were 4 fish over 24 inches brought in during the Tuesday night tournament. Usually abut 50 particiapants.

Lots of bait activity on Lowrance in the deeper waters near where I was fishing. A lot more than any of the places I've been fishing on lake Palestine.

Can't wait to go again.

Yep, I've been pulling it with rod and reeling in the slack to stay in contact.
