Addicted to Frogs

Postby oprcsr » Tue May 15, 2012 3:04 pm

So I seem to have a problem, besides swimbaits I seem to want to buy every dang frog that comes out on the market. Right now I have...

Spro Bronzeye 65 Tree Frog
Capt Kens Brown
Koppers Big Yellow
Koppers Med Green/Yellow
Koppers Small Brown/Black
Koppers Small Grey field mouse
Deps Basirsky Black
I lost a Spro Popping Frog

And now I want a Jackall Iobee, mostly based on its supposed better walking ability and that Cody Meyer magical video.

Anyone have a favorite? My most success has come from the Spro followed by the Koppers field mouse. I do like the feel and look better with the Koppers frogs. Love the idea of the Basirisky but haven't fished it much as its a new purchase.

The funniest/saddiest part of the whole thing is I don't have any local places to really frog fish (or haven't found one yet), so I tend to just use them as open water baits.

Stanley Ribbits have landed me my best so far (21.5" LMB). I have had some success with the Capt. Ken Daubert's Clone series. I also have some SPRO Bonzeye Jrs and a couple SPRO Popping Frogs that have serve me well.

I have some Ribbits but haven't had much luck if at all yet with moving frog types. I tend to do better with slow methodical top water stuff. I do need to give them more of a try though.

I always start with the Ribbits. IF I don't get any action in the first 5-10 casts, I will recast to the same area with the SPRO Popper. If I still get no bites, I will use the Clone for an in-between presentation. Usually, I never make it past #1 on the waters I fish ;) ;)

I always have a frog of some type tied on.I have been trying out the new booyah pad crasher and have been impressed so far.Its alot like the spros as far as action and looks but is a softer body which seems to get a better hook up ratio .Surprisingly they have been very durable.15-20 fish before I retire them because they start sinking too fast because of tears and holes.

Does the soft plastics glue not work to fix that? I've been mulling around the idea of open water frogging and I'm kind of curious.

I also love to throw a frog, but for the most part I've been able to stick with the Snag-Proof frogs, and have had a lot of success.

By the way, if you're really addicted to Snag-Proof type frogs, then whatever you do, DO NOT click this link -- http://flipinthebird.com/ :D

Ive tried super glue and it will work a fish or 2 but wont hold.dont know about the glue you are talking about. The booyahs are about half the price of the spros so I figure after 15 fish I got my moneys worth and just tie on a new one.I havent really tore up a spro but have trouble hooking fish and I like the scum frog trophy frogs but find they only last 3-5 fish but have a good hook up ratio.so to me the booyahs are a good medium.

I have never tried one on completely open water before but I cant see any benefits of thowing a frog over something like a popr or spook unless you know for a fact that they are only hitting frogs. You would get a lot better strike to hooked and landed ratio with the treble hooks if that makes any sense.A weedless frog really comes into its own when there are alot of timber or grass where the other topwaters would stay snagged.I could however see that a white frog in open water could be mistaken by a bass for being a shad or bait fish.JMO.But most of the time a frog will be around some type of cover.

I guess I used open water a little loosely. I normally don't have grass or pads to throw around but there are plenty of laydowns, and I do mean plenty. A frog would make a good weedless option for those applications I do believe.

I'm a big fan of Snag Proof, both the Bobby's perfect and the Ish. Those Iobee caught my eye too, thinking about giving one a shot.

On a side note, it seems like many folks include the "toad" style baits when discussing "frogs". While they both resemble an amphibian and are topwater baits, I think it is important to think of them as totally separate baits . Not only is each is fished in a different manner with different equipment, but frogs require a different set of skills. ;)
