Fishing with the Firedog

Postby Bass & BBQ » Sat Jun 16, 2012 11:23 am

I was finally able to get out with our very own Lt. Firedog on Friday. The fishing wasnt very good but we had a good time. Hopefully the first of many trips. Greg is a great guy and a lot of fun to fish with.

Greg wanted to try the infamous Snook Islands and since it is an easy drive for me, I agreed. I caught a snook the last time I was here but this time not so much. We were able to find bait but no fish under them.

This trip featured sketchy put in and take outs, aerobic activity, glassy smooth water, easy paddling, a dinosaur, a suspicious duo on a tandem, and procreation (not the same duo). :o

The only catching we did was a little cuda I caught and a monster mangrove snapper for the Lt. We got on the water at about high tide and fished casually waiting for the tide to start moving out. During the time we were out, the water dropped quite a bit but the water never really got moving. I suspect it was because we had a wind against the current. Made paddling back to the ramp nice but didnt help create those ambush points. This area can have snook and I've seen a tarpon and a really big cuda but not a high number of fish. It really seems to require good water movement to get these predator fish active.

We threw topwater, DOA shrimp,CAL tails and Baitbusters. Heck, someone even thew some Gulp. We just couldnt get those snook we were looking for. All in all though, we had some laughs and some beautiful weather.

This is the newly built kayak launch area. You only get to use this after you have walked the 2.7 miles from where you have to park your car. Well, maybe it's not that far but it's not close. Anyway, launch looks like a cool idea but a little harder to use than we first anticipated. I wouldn't use the word "graceful" to describe that experience.

Awesome report! Looks like you guys had fun. That "kayak dock" looks...uhm....interesting....I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have near the coordination needed to use something like that....great pics, too!

Nice Report. It's always fun to fish with a buddy. I noticed the same about the snook on my last trip. No bites at all until the tide started to move.

Took me a bit to download the pics......

Met-up with Bass & BBQ at a Lake Worth ICW kayak launch that looks great to the untrained eye, but leaves a lot to be desired to those in the know...but we made due and nobody got wet or hurt.

The Snook Island's are a re-nourishment project by the State of Florida & Palm Beach County to create spoil island for water cleansing and to create habitat for numerous saltwater species. They did an awesome job, we just didn't find the what we were looking for......today, but we will eventually.

As Daryl said, a Barracuda and a nice Mangrove Snapper were it for the day, but it was a great time on the water (& off)......saw two Rangers in a tandem kayak; what kind of Rangers you ask, well the kind that kept calling after B&B "hey, Missster Fiishermann" (must be said with a lisp :D ), two bums trying to procreate under the ICW bridge and a cool iguana sunning him/herself on the rocks by the Lake Worth Municipal Golf Course.

I can see hitting this area again, but next time the D-man is coming north for Snook, Trout & Reds!

Just past o'dark thirty...Pescador on patrol.

Congrats on getting out with a fellow KBF member. The fishing may be tough, but the company is always good

I am just glad there were no video cameras running while we launched or disembarked. Greg used some sort of drop in technique and I used a variation of a pommel horse move.

Coming out of the water was equally entertaining.

Funny that you mention the word "Lisp." I say that because whoever came up with that word is a tremendous S.O.B. Think about it - If you HAVE one, you can't even SAY it! Heck, you can't even [i]SPELL it!!!
