Salt reel under 150?

Postby mrdeuce » Thu Jul 19, 2012 7:59 pm

Hey guys looking for a traditional (round reel) to match alongside my penn slammer for mostly blues and fluke, but id like it to have the line capacity/drag to handle the occasional lunker striper.

Price limit is 150. but cheaper would be nicer. I am going to load this with 40 to 50lb braid and a top shot of 60lb mono or fluro

Rod suggestions under 100 appreciated but I am leaning towards another ugly stick tiger jigging pole as its been a horse for me.

thanks for any help and heres a pic of said "lunker stripers"

I would hound eBay for a used Shimano Tekota 300-500 or an Abu Garcia Record 40-50. Just read the reviews on Tackle Tour and you'll see that for the money they are hard to beat.

x2 on the Record. One of the most under-rated reels on the market.
Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160 aka USS Gojira.

Are you wanting a reel that you can cast, troll, bottom drop, or all three? I would go with something used.

i dont need to cast. just bottom drop or troll. im going to take a look at a record. i prefer to avoid used as ive had a bad experience with my last surf combo that was used.

I understand trying to avoid used.

Some options would be the Shimano TR Series that is rated for saltwater, I use the Abu Garcia 6500 C4 I know it's not made for salt, but I rinse it out well at the end of the day and after the trip break it down and thourally clean and re-lube. Sarah uses the Okuma Solterra SLR 15, and really likes it. The Abu Garcia Record like mentioned before is a good choice also. These are the reels that I have personal experience with under the $150 price point.
