BRIERY BIG BASS BLOWOUT!!!

Postby BigYaker » Mon Jan 11, 2010 11:08 pm

I know a lot of you have heard us talk about Briery Creek. So much in fact that some may think we are exaggerating a bit. I promise you we are not. It is one of the best largemouth fisheries in VA. Below is an excerpt from Virginia Outdoors (http://www.virginia-outdoors.com) describing Briery.

Briery Creek Lake Overview
There is no argument that Briery Creek Lake has dominated the trophy largemouth
bass scene in Virginia over the last decade. Briery Creek Lake, a relatively young
845-acre lake in Prince Edward County near Farmville, was stocked with Florida
strain and northern strain largemouth bass in 1986 and 1987. It was first opened
to fishing in 1989, and it literally burst on to the big bass scene in 1992 when it
produced six largemouth in excess of 10 lbs – led by a 13 lb 4 oz monster – in only
its fourth fishing season.

Since 1992, Briery Creek has entrenched its position as the crown jewel of big
bass fishing in VA (click here for our related article). Not surprisingly, Briery Creek
Lake holds down the 2nd and 3rd spots on the all-time Virginia big bass rankings
with a 16 lb 3 oz bass in 1995 and a 16 lb 2 oz bass in 2002. In fact, Briery Creek
produced the heaviest annual bass in the Commonwealth every year from 1994-
2002. Consider April 1-14, 1995 when during unquestionably the greatest two
weeks of trophy bass fishing in Virginia history, Briery Creek Lake produced eight
bass over 13 pounds! Effective January 1, 2001, a protected slot limit of 14” – 24”
went into effect, and only one fish may be kept over 24”

This Spring I am organizing a 3 Day fishing extravaganza at Briery Creek. I am leaning towards camping in hopes of keeping this event as affordable as possible -especially for our out of town brethren. It's also a lot of fun swapping fishing stories around a campfire  The first weekend in March (5th-7th) is the target date. It should be plenty of time for one of us to catch a trophy bass!
Please let me know if you are interested.

CAMPING ARRANGEMENTS:

Bear Creek Lake
Location- 22 Bear Creek Lake Road, Cumberland, VA 23040

I've reserved & paid for 5 primitive camping sites. Each site can accomidate 6 people so we should have plenty of room. The grand total was $256. Once we split it up it will only be $10-$15 a person. Not a bad deal for two nights!!

Check In- When ever you can get there. I will be getting there early on Friday to make sure our sites are all together.
Check Out- 3 PM

For those people who plan on getting here on Thursday I have room for two at my house and I am sure some other local's will have some room.

What to Bring-
Tents - I woud suggest bringing two man tents - 4 men max unless you are planning on sharing a tent with someone.
Food- Each campsite has a fire ring with a grill over it. Maybe we can cook out each night? We need to make sure we have enough wood.
Clothing- Please dress for the weather! If temps are still cool you will need waders, a dry suit or something similar. Cotton is a no no in cold weather. A material that wicks moisture is the way to go.
Safety - Hopefully all of you bring a dry bag with safety items on every trip you make. You should have a change of clothes, fire starter, tinder, and a first aid kit in your bag.

Tina and I will fish it, as for camping, I did my camping from 1977 to 1990 from the rank of Pvt to Staff Sergeant. Roughing it to me is when room service is closed. If we ever start camping, I'll be hauling a pop up with kayak racks on top! :o I can however, sit around a campfire and lie (I mean, tell fish stories) then drive the 30 minutes home. ;)

This is perfect timing for kicking off the 2010 Challenge Series. I can't give special points for special locations, but I can add some Briery Bonus Bucks to add a little extra incentive. I will do this based on participation.
