Shoal Bass: City Style

Postby Fishing Fanatic » Sat Jun 20, 2009 8:04 pm

Went to visit my son who lives near Cochran Shoals on the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta. He asked me to "bring the boats". So... I loaded up Friday afternoon and headed north. He's told me before that he lives on the banks of the Chattahoochee but I had no idea he lived on one of the best sections for kayak fishing. We hit the river this morning putting in at Powers Island. We only fished for a few hours so it turned out to be mostly a scouting trip. The fish were not very hungry... at least not for what we were offering. I did land a largemouth and a shoal bass early on a buzz bait. Chris caught a small largemouth to so neither one of us got skunked. After paddling down under the I-285 bridge I broke out a Chartruse/White spinnerbait and landed a pretty nice Shoal bass that went about 2 1/2 lbs. I had to get back home so we didn't fish too long... plus the heat here has been extremely bad the last few days. Can't wait to try that stretch of water again soon. Here are a few photos of the area...

FF,
I floated that stretch yesterday for the first time and i was pleasantly surprised with the fishing and scenery! The floatilla got about a 2# shoalie and a 3# largemouth. All I got was dinks but it's still awesome!

My favorite too BP... and they put up a good fight! Funny thing about this area... most of the people we spoke to when we took out had no idea "Bass" were in there. I guess they thought it was strictly for tube and canoe rentals... :D :D

Yeah, people are idiots... they assume that if a bridge goes over it or if you can see a house there must not be fish, its just a concrete line canal or something with chlorine water for tubing and rafting.... IDIOTS, more fish for us right?!

I've never caught a shoalie b4. One thing I want to do if I get down there to georgia (which I will)... ;)

Hey - we should plan an outing down this way for the Fall. I'm no expert but I believe I can put you on some Shoal Bass for sure. You guys are welcome anytime.

Awesome report. I think a road trip is brewing for some of the VA crew to come down and catch some shoalies.
