Knot Strength

Postby MidTNKayakAngler » Tue Mar 13, 2012 2:13 pm

I was in the garage last night getting gear ready for this evening. I have some new spools of BPS fluorocarbon that I spooled some spinning reels with 8lb, and 10lb for Hybrids. I tied on a 3/8 jig head to the 8lb and got out the bogas to test the knot and line just being courious. I used the Improved Clinch thourally wetted the line before tying it and was careful thru the entire process. I visually inspected the line and saw no defects and when I was testing with the Bogas the line broke at the knot with not even 4 lbs of pressure.

I then cut off about 5-8" of line and retied the same know and re-testing and this time I pulled to 8lbs, and no breakage. This is my second year of using the BPS 100% fluorocarbon and I've had no failures besides this one time. I was wondering if anyone else tests their knots or line that they use and if so how. I usually just tie the knot and give it a good secure pull.

I have never tested my knots but i pretty much always use the palomar whether using braid or mono/flouro.

If you have a smart phone there is the knotwars app which is pretty cool. Has videos of all the knots and their breaking strengths

I've never tested my knot strength before but that is an interesting result you got.

My first use of Fluoro was Berkley Vanish which I stopped using after I would regularly break the line at the knot with my typical hookset of a t-rigged plastic worm.
