Stowing fish ?

Postby NAVYIDC » Mon May 18, 2009 2:43 pm

Ok here's me question, stowing fish, normally I like to just put them on a stringer but as the water temp rises I plan on bringing a cooler along an placing it in me front hold of my yak, only issue is it's not that long.
Whats the regulations on cutting up yer fish and stowing them? Reason is, what if a fish and game warden were say hey let me see yer plunder an ye have these fish stowd minus the heads ect... how would one justify the legal length ?

Food for thought?

In SC you must land your fish w/ head and tail intact. Otherwise, it's a guaranteed ticket. With a slot size from 15-23, not that hard to get a fish to wrap around in my softsided cooler

Down here at the Gulf of Mexico florida panhandle area, STRINGER = SHARK! on more than one occasion i have had 6'-8' bull sharks take an entire stringer right next to the yak. yak jerks sideways and at that point you only hope the shark cuts the stringer rope. we don't stringer fish in salt anymore. there are more reads about this on our forum FCKA.net

also, in florida, redfish limit is 1 per person per day. fish must be whole.

STOWING (!?!?!) fish?? Freakin' navy puke!!

In the AF we stick 'em on ice or put 'em on a stringer. I usually catch so many I let 99.9% go. 8-) 8-)

start by tying a knot in your stringer about 1' from the cork

Image

Pick a side of the redfish..say the right side...push the stringer point down thru the lip

Image

and come out under the bottom jaw bone

Image

making sure that the redfish can open and close his/her mouth

Image

if you put another one on the string make sure that you choose the same side of the red's face on the second one that you did on the 1st so that they will face the same way..

Image

This is the method I've used for all live weigh in tournies and I've kept fish alive from 6am -2pm no problem..shallow water...90 degree temps..

This works every time. The reason why you put not or clip about a foot away from the float on the stringer is because in the summertime the waters much hotter near the surface this will keep the fish a foot or two below the surface in much cooler water. This will even work on trout, flounder, bass and lots of other different types of fish
