Float trip advise needed for North Fork Holston River.

Postby uncross » Tue Apr 17, 2012 12:09 pm

My brother and I are trying to fish the Northfork of the Holston River this weekend, and are having trouble finding information on access, float trip lengths, rapids, ect.. All I can find is a dgif boat ramp in Saltville, but can't find any info on access above or below for a put in or take out. Could someone send me a pm with any advise, thanks.

Where exactly are you trying to float from/to? I float the NF of Holston all the time. Mainly around Weber City.

I haven't fished it around Saltville. Have only fished it from around Hiltons, VA down to the TN border. Definitely some good smallmouth fishing though.

I just chose the saltville area, b/c only access that I have found. I think it would be the least drive for us also.

I have done many floats on that small river. Most of my put ins and take outs were informal ones at bridge crossings. Get a copy of Roger Corbett's Virginia Whitewater and you will have the distances between bridges and be able to string together a nice days float. It's kind of small up near Saltville, so you might want to head further downstream considering the lack of rain we've been having.

You might also pick up a copy of DeLorme's Gazeteer for Virginia. It help me find some great places when I lived in South Carolina.

I solo the North Fork down near Kingsport, TN in the late spring through early fall while the water levels are low. It's an easy paddle up float down trip in that area. If you decide to hit that area let me know I would like to go. It widens out and slows down a lot in the area.
