Susqy River Raid April 28th ???

Postby wilp » Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:18 am

Given the interest posted in another thread I'm proposing a Susqy River Raid April 28th if it works into everyone's schedules.

I'm interested and will confirm as we get closer to April. Have you got an idea about where?
Thanks, Mike

I've only fished the Susqy a handful times. Not sure of the best location for a raid, I'm hoping some of the locals will chime in.

A raid this time of year in PA is probably not a good idea. A lot of the water up there is closed to fishing for smallmouth during this time due to the spawn.

Good point Aaron. But if I remember Juan correctly, the main river will close the first of May. I've got a trip set up with Juan on the 14th, & he wanted to get the trip in during April. I believe its main Susky, first 35 miles of Juaniata, & 1/2 mile up all other small tribs closed from first of May till middle of June. Need Jeff or Juan to chime in.

Something tells me you PA guys that live close to Potomac will be fishing it more during that time :D

I maybe off on the start date, but PRETTY sure the 28th should work. But you can also look at that date as a bad time, to a degree. Since it's right before the river closes, I think you could expect ALOT of boat traffic on the main river on the Saturday. Just need to keep eyes open for jet boats.

You're absolutely correct on the dates. The closure to Bass Fishing is from May 1 until June 15 2012 of this year. It's in the 2012 fishing regulations on page 5.. You must release all Smallmouth caught without removing them from the water The closure affects 98 miles of the Susquehanna (From the fabridam at Sunbury to Holtwood Dam) and 32 miles of the Juniata (From SR0075 at Port Royal to the confluence of the River) and includes 1/2 mile of all tributaries of both rivers, upstream from their confluence. Also, no tournaments during this time frame.

The remainder of the year it is Catch-photo-immediate release only for these areas. Oddly it is for both species---smallmouth and largemouth.

Good points raised here. My thoughts were to try and push it out as far as possible given the change in regs, and to allow time for everyone to work out their schedules.

I'm game for anything so if you all want to throw out some ideas please feel free to do so.
