Swatara Creek

Postby Colonel Angus » Wed Mar 24, 2010 10:57 pm

She is not a river but in most parts she could be considered one. I had two hours to play on her today. I had wanted some flat water at Irvings pond or Memorial Lake but the winds drove me to the creek. Fished for smallies. The water was moving fast. Water temp was 54 and air temp 57.
This is one day after two solid days of rain. The water had been falling fast which is not ideal for my prey. I essentially paddled to some wading areas and fish those areas fairly well. Which it what I normally do on this creek but it was required today, not a choice at all. I tried fishing the holes that typically hold but they were not there today. The higher water moved or eliminated breaks. I was throwing suspending jerks, countdowns, cranks, soft plastics and, inline spinners.

I did stick three fish. Three large white suckers all on the inline. All over 14" and still not worthy of a photo. I did not bother to pull the camera out today. The water was fast and I caught nothing worth pulling it out for. But he is a consolation of the area I was fishing with much better conditions.

That does look like a nice area. Better luck next time.

I did a class on that creek two years ago. We were up on it fairly high. It was a decision we made to find clear water. We couldn't have floated where we did the day after we went (it dropped a bunch while we were out). It does produce nice smallies in certain stretches.
