Coastal Fly Fishing Questions

Postby BamaFan » Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:24 am

I'm heading over to the Georgia coast near St. Simon's for vacation next week. The house we are renting is on the marsh and comes with kayaks and a canoe. I plan to take the fly rod and was hoping someone would give me a few tips or suggestions on what to use in that area. I'm guessing there will be trout and reds in the marshes? Thanks

What weight fly rod do you have? You'll probably want a 7 - 9 wt with a floating line for reds and trout.

I've not fished that area, but I'd start by filling a small fly box with chartreuse/white, black, and all white Clousers in about size 2 and 1/0, then some SeaDucers or Whistlers in about the same sizes and colors. I'd also want a couple Decievers, maybe a Bendback or two, and of course a small stack of size 4 and 6 Kwan flies. A few Copperheads and a spoon fly or two would round out the box.

Of course, I take WAY too many flies on these trips, but I think I could fit a representative selection in a large Scientific Anglers box.
