Current Hatch in Alabama, Mayflies?

Postby BamaFan » Thu Jul 19, 2012 7:28 pm

I saw this on my way home today. I only saw a few and thought it was a little late for a Mayfly hatch. Can anyone verify this is indeed a Mayfly?

Mayfly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayfly Looks the same to me.

I was out on a small lake last weekend once the sun got up good there where Blue Dragonfly's everywhere. The Bass started coming out of the water chaseing them all around me but I could'nt get a single bite on the normal poppers or streamers! Finaly tied on the only dragonfly I had and It Was On!

Certainly a mayfly; despite the name they hatch out 12 months out of the year. Looks like a Brown Drake, or could be a Stenonima, maybe a late March Brown, but looks too dark to be a Hexagenia Limbata. Most important to you would be to match the size first and then the color....fish don't read Latin.

Agreed but you'll also want to pay attention to their action, sometimes a lil skitter and jiggle gets alot of attention.

Here in lower Alabama we had them heavy and strong back in late July and there is a pattern on youtube but anything on top of the water usually works. Find the nests hanging in trees and fish below it when theyre swarming.
I'd rather be lucky than good

The other thing to remember is mayfly is a generic term for pretty much any fly that looks like the ones you posted.

I know i have been out before and had a caddis hatch go off that was so thick you were breathing them in and the fish were gorging themselves. Ironically enough it wasn't on top as i would have thought but they were going after the emergers. Once i figured that out, i caught more smallmouth in a 45 minute span than i ever had before. I was really glad i had my trout fishing fly box with me on that trip :)

Happens a lot in Virginia. That's why you always keep at least a couple of these in the fly box.
