SEPTEMBER FLY OF THE MONTH!!!!!

Postby Knot Right » Tue Sep 01, 2009 9:06 pm

This month, I am going to add a twist. This one is based on an experience that I had. I was sitting in the kayak next to a field that was being cut by farmers in late summer/early fall. All of a sudden, there were three or four field mice swimming across about 20 yards in front of me. Each subsequently disappeared in a swirl and a BLOOMP and since then I have used mouse flies as a backwater fish slayer! So this month, the Fly of the Month is for the best MOUSE fly. Let's see 'em!!!!

You're making me work for this one.
I hate spinning and packing deer hair, so I'm working on a different pattern. Now I have to see if I can get it to come together into something I can tie and cast.

I'm just not good at spinning deer hair. I did this one w/ 8/0 Uni and it was better / easier than 3/0, but still not good. Guess I need more practice.

One tip I will offer about spinning deer hair is to use kevlar thread, you can pull it a lot tighter and get the hair to spin better. Just be careful not to tie it so hard that you cut the hair.......

We will have to put together a step by step to show you. It basically means you stack deer hair on top of the hook and wrap the thread around it, when you pull the thread tight it makes the hair "spin" around the hook shank and flair up!

What's the problem boys and girls??????? Ok, skip the girls part, Tina, you just sit back and watch. ;)

It's september 28th and there are a WHOPPING 2 FLIES ENTERED. Sheesh, give 'em a little challenge, and they shrink away like violets.

Come on 2 days left, let's see some furry creations. I've got one up my sleeve. ;)

I'm stopping by the storage unit tonight to drop off my kayak/ fishing gear. I'll pick up my fly station while I'm there and we'll see what I can come up with.
