Fish out of water...North GA

Postby DitchRat » Thu Jun 28, 2012 9:59 am

In college and a lot of my friends yaked...thought it was the stupidest thing ever. Not stable and too much work. I was wrong

Looking to get into yaking for fishing purposes. Not really into the scenic staring at century old oaks and old man's beard. There are a lot of small aka sub 30 acre lakes were I go to school. Most are electric only so the big boys stay around Lanier and other big boat friendly lakes. My boss has a jackson big tuna or something huge that is awesome/staple/yacht like. Due to college budget and car issues I can't get something that luxurious.

By the title I'm totally lost. Know how to fish dang well but choosing the right yak is a totally different story. Looking for some thing that will get fished on small lakes/resivors for 99% of the time and maybe a Chestatee/Chattahoochee a few rear times. These lakes/resiovors are pretty calm with light chow on occasion. Have a budget of around $500 just for the yak. Will go higher or lower if need be. Feel I can get a better quality used than new but don't know where to score the deals.Thinking about Ocean Kayak Mysto or Frenzy if I get new. My dream would be a Jackson Day triper if I could find a used one. I'm fine with less comfort if it means more stable or storage. BTW--> I'm a medium sized guy. 5'10, 180lb male 20 years old. Any idea's would be welcomed!!

WILDERNESS SYSTEMS KAYAKS

Welcome aboard - if you can find one, check out the West Marine Pompano 120, it is a re-badged Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 and is an excellent starter yak. You can order them online and have it delivered to the closest WM store and avoid the shipping costs!!

Also check out the BASSifieds on the forum, there are plenty of good deals on there as well and many with good MOJO on them :D :D .

Welcome to KBF, if you would have been here last week I would have sold and delivered you a 2010 Tarpon 120 with very few hours on it. As I delivered a Tarpon 160 to Acworth, but I got in trouble when the wife unit found out I was selling kayaks, so I can't do that anymore:D

There is a lot of information to be acquired here, and keep a look out on Craigslist and the Bassifides. If you have any questions about a particular kayak there are some very knowledgeable people here that will be more than willing to give their opinion, and hopefully guide you in the right direction.

That's a super bummer on that one you delivered. I live in Acworth off bells ferry rd. Thanks for the tips. I'm really digging that West Marine Pompano. In my price range. Stinks it's on backorder -_-

Welcome aboard and good luck on the search.

I am fishing out of an '08 Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120, the same exact mold as the West Marine Pompano 120. It is a really good yak.

Got a game plan guys...the pompano is on backorder till mid-late July but I think it will be worth the wait since it's got solid reviews. Looks like it's a great yak for a noob. Getting leads on a roof rack so all seems to be going good, just a little slower than I would like  Had a hard time falling asleep last night thinking of all the fish that will be in my sights since I'm off the banks.

Thanks for the welcomes! Feel like this forum has a lot less drama than the other bass fishing/swimbait forums I frequent.
