Day of Dinks on the New

Postby philipgoldwing » Sun Jul 08, 2012 8:04 am

I had the pleasure of getting out with a fellow KBF'er on Sat. morning. I had never met Anglerxxx but had chatted on the phone a couple of times. Scott is from Ca. and has been hitting the New hard this past year. He surely seems to have the hang of it though.
We put in at Pembroke around 9 Am. He has floated this section to Bluff Ctiy many times so he was the guide. He had asked me several times if I was OK with some whitewater. No problem I assured him.
It was a great float. He and his girlfriend had already dropped a vechicle at the take out. How convienent! I guess we were on the river about 10 hours. We caught numerous dinks but nothing bigger than say 14". Could not find the bigger ones. The fish were difinately hanging in the fast water and just below it. We tried deep also. Nothing but dinks.
Scott hooked one fat 14" but had released it just before I got there to take a pic. I guess my most memerable moments were when I hooked up and was comng onto some big whitewater. Didn't want to loose the fish so I quickly tossed the anchor out. Big mistake as the anchor was mid yak. When it grabbed it stopped me dead and over I went! The yak stayed upright and I lost nothing but my hat which was shot anyway. It was refreshing and pretty funny afterwards. The second was what Scott called Hidden Falls. Aptly named because you can't see it til it's too late to adjust. I guess about a 3' drop. It was a blast.
All in all it was a great day and good to get out with a fellow KBRer! Scott, I had a great time and look forward to other floats with you.

A day of dinks is better than a day of nothing :D

Congrats on a nice day, & always better when fishing with a fellow KBF member. I know others will say this, out of concern for well being, but you definitely need to move that anchor from mid-kayak to front. That's if you even use one. As you found out, having the anchor mid-yak in current can get you into trouble. Glad you didn't loose anything.

Yep, I'll take the dinks all day long. I do have an anchor troley but as I had a fish on just left it midway. The first thing I said when I surfaced was STUPID! It did happen again later i the day. The second time over the rapids I went...fish and all and did land him. Lesson learned well. But I did loose my favorite fishing hat. Good thing I have a B-day coming up.

Hey all,
Had a great time fishing with Phil, and being a total newb to the site, I really enjoyed the fact that the first person I met from KBF was totally cool!

The morning almost seemed to hint at a crappy day ahead, but we kept at it and were rewarded with ok numbers considering how hot it was. We did land a couple decent smallies.

Not the greatest picture, but this was my best fish of the day!

I'm not an anchor user myself, and other than Phil's little mishap, he really used the anchor to the fullest advantage. I was feeling a little jealous! Used cautiously, an anchor can really set you up well to fish some areas that I spend alot of time trying to eddy, or paddling my ass off. I actually have one, just never used it yet.

Thanks again Phil, and thanks to KBF!

The more KBF anglers you fish with, the more you will find this as true. From attending the YakAttack tourney to fishing on individual trips with several kbf members, it's always good. I've gained several new fishing buddies from KBF!!!

The water level doesn't seem too bad right now, I seem to remember last year being a bit lower at this time. I am a little worried that late summer might get [i]really[i] dry though.
