A little peeved in Costa Rica

Postby Too Busy » Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:20 pm

The wife and I are staying at a great resort in Puntarena... absolutely gorgeous here. Typical weather.... dead calm in the morning, wind bulding throughout the day as the sun heats everything, subsiding about 5 pm, sunset at 6, dead calm by 6;30 pm.

The 2 reasons I'm bummed:
1. I can't get a charter for less than a grand. It's vacation, but DAYUM a grand for 1/2 day fishin c'mon. Clearly there have been too many yankee touristas here.

2. the resort has about a 1/2 dozen kayaks and won't let me take one out. The wind she's too strong senor...... the waves, they're too beeeg senor..... the tide, it's too high there is much driftwood and much danger senor. No kayak, but you want to reent a yet skee????

I yak every week of my life and they tell me it's too dangerous, but I've never been on a jat ski in my life and they're ready to rent me one.

I mean WTF :?: :?: :?:

 Damn foreigners! Just grab it and paddle out, if the conditions are soo bad, they won't paddle after you. Either that or throw a mil crate on that jetski and roll out!

Are you near any other places? Do you have car? I would be checking out alternatives nearby where you can rent a yak.

I am jealous, I love it there. You might want to take a ride to a more remote are, less touristas, and ask about a charter in a pub. I was in CR 2 tears ago and I was able to find a charter with a local fisherman (Panga Fishing) in his homemade boat. You don't need to get far out to get into Mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna etc. or even closer snapper roosterfish.

I pd 300 for 6 hours for me and my wife including a homemade lunch made by his wife and Cervaca and caught dolphin, tuna and a nice rooster. He was in Nosara, not very close to you, but if you get away from the crowds the price and fishing should be much better. I may have gotten lucky, he was reccommended by a small resort owned by a couple from Key West, he was an excellent fisherman and a very nice nice guy. His english wasn't great but between my hs Spanish and his English we got along just fine

Good luck

I second ChugDawg...Wander off the beaten path..you will find a better deal. While in Indonesia all of our transportation was located in small off the wall places.

I haven't given up hope yet. There is a rocky cliff with a nice color change about a 10 minute paddle from my room.
It looks like shallow dirty water in the bay here in front of the hotel for about 300 yards, then 2 abrupt color changes brown to green, then green to blue. The cliff gest diectly from surf zone to blue water with a sandbar pointing out into the gulf. It just SCREAMS fish.

I've got a 10 wt fly rod, 40 pound terminal furled leader, 5 feet of 30 pound fluoro and a big box of assorted flies. Just waiting for the chance. We take a trip tomorrow to do some of the "adventure" stuff in the rainforest. Zip lines, rapelling, waterfalls, rope bridges. I'm going to see if I can scrape something together for Friday.

Tell her your will rent the jet ski as long as the yak and paddle comes with it!!
I second what they said up top. Just get you a local with a hollowed out log and go for it. Just get one of those PFD's from the resort, just in case!! Good luck man, my bets on you getting it done!!
