While at a friends house this evening we got to talking about bow hunting and how I wanted to try it out this year. We were talking about some different types of bows and then he told one of his kids to grab something out of the other room. The boy come back with a bow and my friend told me that if I would use it, it's mine. HECK YEAH! I am down for doin my part to fill the deep freeze

The bow is a Martin MT-6 Cougar 11 Compound. I know it is a little dated, but it is in great shape. The limbs are not cracked and everything seems spot on for an older bow. However, I have scoured the internet and info on this bow is few and far between.

Does anybody have any info on this bow or have any experience with it? I am going to head to the bow shop tomorrow or monday and see about getting a new quiver, sights, a new rest and some other nick knacks to get it up to date.

I got a roast today that was taken with a crossbow recently. Gonna wrap it in bacon and put it in the smoker on low for 1/2 day.

the bow shop should be able to set you up and tell you what you need to know.practice,practice,and practice some more.

If you cant determine when the bow was last shot, then I highly suggest new strings n cables, providing the bow can be adjusted to your draw length. The shop will be able to tell you if the bow is worth setting up, and like D said, "what you need to know"

First thing you need to do is have your personal draw length measured and then see if the bow can be fit to you a good Archery shop can show you how to do that. Then before spending any more money on the bow have the archery shop inspect the bow for worn bearings,fractured or damaged limbs,damaged cams and old or worn cables and string.
Do Not shoot a unknown compound bow before Careful inspection, there is ALOT of energy stored in a compound bow and the failure of one component can cause severe personal injury.
If everything checks out get it tuned up some correct weight and draw length arrows and feild points a safe place to practice and some instruction ( check out local archery clubs and archery shops for shooting lanes etc ) then......

Don't be worried about the bow being older. Get the limbs and string looked at and set it up and shoot it. That bow still has plenty of speed and energy to kill a deer. Plenty more than you actually need! Guys are killing them all the time with Traditional and Primitive Indian type bows, so yours will put one down just fine.

If you can adjust it on weight don't crack it really high unless your very strong. Weight is just hard on your rotator cuff. Don't shoot like people you see with their elbow high. Draw with your elbow level. Try it both ways and you should notice the difference. High elbows are hard on the shoulder!

Just some advice on hunting. The more gadgets you put on your bow setup are more points of failure, more things to go wrong. Practice shooting straight on to start. Once you are good at that try twisting and turning to the sides as deer come at you from all angles sometimes. If your not used to weird angles and lining up your sights, you'll never get that shot. Many times those are the best deer also!

The deer around here are just starting to rut. I've seen bucks curling their lips and does are dying more regularly on the road from running from them at night.

a very good point I overlooked, as a 3D Competition shooter several years ago, we would pin the limbs, (crank them down for speed) but still had to maintain speeds under 300fps.....I can tell you this from my own personal experience, I had a Hoyt pinned at 65lb draw weight, the first year I hunted I sat on stand one afternoon, a nice hefty doe came strolling up the trail, the adrenalin was flowing, and my heart pounding, I had my first shot at a real deer, as I began to draw, with all my excitement, and being totally nervous, I could barely draw my bow, needless to say my clumsiness in the tree stand that day, fighting to draw to my bow, cost me my first deer. I went to the shop, and bought a new bow, strictly for hunting, with a peek draw of 50lbs pinned it was plenty fast, and whisper quiet...just something to think about DL.
