My first Hybrid Striper

Postby Capncrunch » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:33 am

A friend and I scheduled a staff meeting Thursday afternoon. Items on the agenda included dragging kayaks through the forest, cutting trails and possibly if checking off a few bucket list quests. Although not quite what expected I did manage my first striper. It was what angler wants to see. Bait crashing the surface and a big knuckle of water. Threw the slayer jig and fluke tail and came up with this.

Just missed my intended goal of a juvenile tarpon. Had a brief hookup and he left me with a scale.

Congratulations, I was not aware of Hybrids in Florida, I knew of some Stripers in NE Florida, and Central Florida.

That hybrid looks a little odd, here they are a lot more football shaped. Like in the pictures I posted earlier this week.

You'll get your Tarpon, I hear they are difficult fish.

Nice catch.

Do you guys have Yellow Bass down there? I think it looks more like a yellow than a striper.....

Yellow Bass are usually taller, the lobes of the caudal fid are more rounded, the stripes are usually more defined/in a straight line and finely dotted, and usually have a yellow tint around the belly. Not saying it isn't a yellow bass, but it just dosn't look right.

It looks more like a white bass, but that would be the biggest white bass I've seen, and the mouth looks bigger and diferently shaped than a White Bass.

I can't see the pic because I'm at work ( did I mention our IT guy is a &$$? )
But it could be what we refer to as a Sunshine Bass which is a hybrid produced by crossing a female white bass with a male stripped bass. Average size is 5-8 lbs but where they have a good forage base alot of them run 10-20lbs. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commision raises them in a hatchery and stocks in many of the larger lakes and rivers here in Florida. Lake Harris, Lake Seminole and the Appalachacola have some Really nice ones!

Great job on your first striped bass! I wish my staff meetings were more like that. If they were I would probably spend less time on KBF at work LOL! That is quite the unusual stripe. I have never seen one like it. I haven't heard of the strain mentioned above, but I do believe this is not your run of the mill hybrid stripe. Not the body shape of a hyb. It is not a white bass that is for certain. Cool points for catching a fish that has us all stumped.

How big is that hybrid compared to the norm of that strain? Small, avg, big? I know the hybrids they raise at the aquaculture farm near me don't get any bigger than that, but they are shaped like a football(sort of short in length, but large in girth). Matt

Now that I'm home and can see the pic Yep thats definately a Florida Sunshine Bass ( which is a hybrid ) notice the broken appearance of the stripes and the slightly elongated shape, It's a Nice one too, Congrats!
Florida does have some straight up stripers in the St Johns and on up to the Lake George area and in the Appalachicola up near the dam.
Where did you catch it that you also got a shot at a Tarpon? Sure looks like a Tarpon scale and a decent juvi at that.
