Got My First Steelhead

Postby sashimigrade » Wed Jan 18, 2012 1:11 am

First ever attempt at steelhead. About 24 inches and 4.5 pounds. Went alone to Vermilion River Ohio, Gore-Orphanage Rd on a map and a hunch about a week ago. It took me 3 hours with only one other bite. This is my first year fly fishing, I'm still trying to figure it out. Finally hooked up with a size 8 black woolly bugger. 6 weight fly rod, 0x leader, one tiny split shot. Other guys were talking about catching 3 or more per day on spinning gear with egg sacks.

I let it go. Fun fish to catch.

Tackle. I don't gain from this. I met one of the guys that works there. He told me that they sell egg sacks and would show me how to rig them:

Ideal flow is 100-200cfs

Again, I don't gain from this but thanks to Mad River Outfitters for the ideal flow range and fishing reports...

PM me if you want more detail on an exact spot.

Nice fresh chromer!

Save the egg sacks for tough days. It's way more fun to catch on flies, beads, and artificials. Not saying I'm against eggs (click me) just saying it's more fun with other lures.

Personally, I'd skip the spinning gear altogether. Read up on float fishing, if you are truly interested in numbers and size. A baitcaster or centre pin rig works great for this. PM me or start a new thread (don't want to steal your thunder here!). And keep up with the flyrod. Each are equally useful tools to get to these fish.

Keep those spots you find close secrets. Trust me on that one. I can't tell you how many good secret spots became "community holes" with just a few internet posts, LOL.

Congrats, and welcome to the club. You just found a great way to shorted winter!

Nice fish! That had to be one epic battle on a 6 weight fly rod!
