New River the first week of April

Postby Jones2231 » Thu Mar 15, 2012 8:41 pm

Hello all,
I am new to KBF and have only been kayak fishing for a year now but am definitely addicted. I have been invited to go smallmouth fishing on the New River during the first week of April and was wondering what lures and presentations you all like for this time of year. Also, if anyone has any input as to what the river conditions have been like or what I may expect I would appreciate it. I am relatively new to smallmouth fishing and have never fished the New River so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your help and take care.

What area of the New will you be fishing? The conditions could be completely different, in different areas.

3/8 oz jig n pigs, the fattest green pumpkin tubes, or whatever heavy craw imitator you have. I say heavy because when they release out of Claytor, the fish feed enthusiastically. With that added flow, you need the weight to keep the lure down where it needs to be. Good luck, and good luck maintaining kayak position to catch some jig fish when they release. If you can pull it off, you will have some terrific days!

Yup - target the rise as fish will feed heavily. We hit it 3/19 and it was fishing like April. We targeted the current seems with jerks and tubes with success. Tube weights of at least 1/4 during the higher flows to get you down to the fish. You might also be able to get some crankbait & spinnnerbait action going in April.
