Time to fess up. Have you turtled?

Postby Too Busy » Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:36 pm

I'll admit it. Got flipped a couple of times in surf launches and landings and got my yak swept out from under me in swift water when I lost my head and leaned upstream (once)

Vote in the poll and feel free to share your story ifyou like.

Yep, as my post from yesterday entails. Same way you did; leaning upstream in swift water.

And, The Poll is broken. Either that, or it thinks I am not telling the truth. :D

I don't know why the poll won't work.

Absolutely, the first time I was not fishing though. I had just got my 1st kayak, this was when I was 16, and my buddy talked me into hitting the river nearby. I didn't have a skirt, we hit some rapids, the boat got heavier, couldn't maneuver it out of the swift stuff, over I went.

The second time I tangled with a strained in a small drain. A buddy of mine gave it a go and turtled, being young and brash I bet him a couple "pops" that I'd make it. I ended up wet and out a few cold ones. I was smart enough, on this particular occasion, to remove my gear before attempting it.

Additionally last wknd Doug and I were fishing on the Doah around some island cuts/breaks. I had just broke off a lure and was trying to quickly tie on another, when I looked up and realized I was being sucked into a brush pile at the begining of the island. I jumped out and managed to keep the boat upright, but lost my paddle in the fray. It happened so quick and I was more concerned if I broke my rod, that I didn't even account for the paddle. Luckily it was an old one that I got my moneys worth out of. It was wooden and was starting to deteriorate anyway...

Not YET, but I have come very close to falling out when standing and drifting and bumping into a stump. Only time will tell.

I have however been EJECTED from a stinkpot once, and that will get ur attention!

Twice... once from a sea kayak, and once from a tarpon 160.. leaned too far out trying to grab a rod that I hooked on a back cast and over I went... the water was SOOOOO cold... I have shared that story here before.

The linky no worky for me either.

I have flipped though. Luckily I had practiced re-entry and was wearing my life jacket. I was fishing for trout in a river and trying to get on the eddy side at the top end of a large blowdown. I was in tight quarters so I tried to pull myself on a log that was sticking up out of the water by using my paddle blade. It worked great, but I started moving a little faster than I had intended and when I tried to pull my paddle out it got stuck so I had a moment. I jerked it too hard and leaned the wrong way and before I knew it I was upside down and wet. Luckily I had all my fly fishing gear locked up in a small coffee can and strapped down. I was also fortunate to have flipped over a rock so I was able to get my footing and not pinned against the blowdown or anything. The water was freezing though so that took my breath away but felt good once I got back above water in the summer heat. Overall it was a good eye opening experience. I was under the impression that I was comfortable enough in my boat that I would never flip it. Proved me wrong. :?
